I'm interested, too. Everything on TV/streaming is an audible blur. CC is distracting.

I would make an appointment with an audiologist. They will do the hearing evaluation and also sell the aids. Check first with how they bill/charge for these. In the past they charged a lump sum that covered the aids, batteries for the life of the aids and also covered visits for adjusting,etc. Since the ACA many are unbundling the charges and just charging for what you actually need/use. Get recommendations from people in your area who wear them. Also ask for the same from doctors. IME the audiologist is every bit as important (if not more) as the aid. Costco is now selling one aid that is the same one I purchased from audiologist, but I don't think the people testing/fitting you are audiologists. If you find them unbundled (at the audiologist), I think the price might be comparable to Costco. You can find audiologists at most ENT practices.

I don't know who my mother went to in Atlanta but the woman is an absolute saint. It took a YEAR and eight different kinds of hearing aids before she finally settled on the last type----probably because there weren't any others to try. Initially I thought they were really expensive but now I think the cost couldn't possibly cover all the time, calls, repeated fittings, returns, and just general difficulty of serving customers with hearing problems.

Anyone got an audiologist or hearing aid vendor they love in Portland, OR?

I've worn hearing aids since I was 25 and it's very important to go to an audiologist. I first went to Tufts Medical in Boston and was diagnosed and treated and, since then, I go to an audiologist I trust and admire. I'm completely deaf now due to otostenosis but, due to technology, I have hearing aids that access the middle ear to allow me to hear. People look at my sideways when they see me talking on my phone with the hearing part placed above my ear, that's how I hear through a tiny chip that transports vibrations. I also have a unit that I have plugged in on the tv that sends the sound to that same chip and only I hear it.
There are so many types of aids and the dr. will know which type is the best for you depending on your loss and your age. Many older people seem to have trouble adapting. I understand that.
If you have a large hospital near you, start with an appt. with an ENT and continue from there. They have a broader base of clients and a better expertise. State clearly how much you want to spend as it can get quite pricey. Hope this helps.
