When my kitchen remodel was done in 2006, we went with a GE Profile from Lowes that was $700. It has repaired about 7 times in the course if a year. Lowes took it back and have us store credit that we used for an Electrolux Wave Touch at $1200. It never worked right for 2 months. Lowes then refunded us back. After being without a unit for the next 2 years, I did some research and decided to go with the Miele Diamante Plus at $1500. I've had it 5 years now and would only ever go with another Miele dishwasher in the future. Even though it doesn't have a heating element, the drying is fine. Only some plastic cups will pond some water on the top, or some Tupperware items need hand dried.

I've also had two Miele Dishwasher. I had one that lasted over 13years and a new one that is over 6months old. Love my dishwashers. A friend has an Asko and even she comments that my dishes come out more sparkling than hers. I use Somat, Method Smarty tabs and Miele tabs as I have them. Etching is a function of soft water. It is not a function of the dishwasher. My old Kitchenaid apart from cleaning poorly by leaving a fine grit all over the dishes also etched water. I resolved the etching my limiting the amount of detergent used when washing the dishes. At the time, I had a whole house water softener in my home. The etching started almost to the day I had Culligan install the softener. With the Miele dishwashers, the majority of them come with a built in Water softener. Some Boschs do this also. If you get a Dishwasher with a softener, you should figure out what type of water you have and either disable the softener or set it to match the incoming water. By the way, I don't think SJhockeyfan was suggesting that you take your dirty dishes to the store but to take your clean dishes to test for fit in the different basket configurations of the dishwashers. Be aware that Miele has a couple of baskets and inserts that change the functions of their baskets so make sure you ask if you are evaluating these units. Good luck with your decision.

Or there is Bosch... The bosch is what I originally considered but again, confusing to pick. No fair way to compare other then just picking a random 500 or 800 series and just going with it. Lowes only carrys a limited selection, if any, on display. With the updates for 2017, I've found lot of the online information is outdated. They had a thermadore open box deal that I would of jumped on but the model had a history of leak complaints so it was a pass. Also almost considering the miele with the auto door open dry for $1,400 and leak detection. The auto door is the only reason why I MAY consider blowing budget but I get torn because most people seem to do fine with bosch's drying set up..by just planning so they open the door after its done. (if I understand correctly) I like that miele is built for longevity but We plan on being in a different house before 6 or so years, if that factors in.

I have been watching this Cove debacle for a long time, hoping that a US manufactured dishwasher that would take my existing (Miele Optima) overlay door would be available when I needed it, and would be higher reliability. (In all fairness, the Optima reliability has become excellent since i replaced the feed water solenoid with my own parts.) I wonder if the problem starts with being late to the dishwasher business such that the forest of existing patents is almost impossible to get around without paying a lot of royalties, or being very limited in design approach. Long in the business companies can trade patent rights for patent rights and keep royalty costs to a minimum. At this point, given the price and history of issues, every delivered Cove dishwasher should have been factory tested under the water chemistry and dish soilage conditions (surely known by Cove) that most strongly correlate with the conditions present at the residences where complaints ultimately lead to dishwasher replacements. I don't see how the present situation maximizes cost containment, much less customer satisfaction.
