Need to replace lilies in garden

I have been plagued with the red lily beetle. I will not use chemicals or anything harsh that could potentially harm the toads living in my garden, my dog, or any other creature (aside from the voles) that may visit the yard. So my only option is to remove the problem. So now I need suggestions on what to replace them with. They're around my newly built deck. There's liriope, two pink clematis (unsure of name), a rose of Sharon (just a baby) with white flowers on the side of the deck where the lilies are that need to be replaced. The other side has daylilies, a hardy hibiscus (not the tall tree one), and more liriope. I would prefer flowering perennials and it is full sun in zone 6. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Do you want something spiky like the lilies, something fragrant, something the same color?

I'd do balloonflowers. Just because.

I had balloon flowers last year in a different garden and the bunnies and/voles ate them. I don't really have any specific wants other than I'd like something colorful. Maybe tall until the clematis get older, I have some pretty creepy neighbors.

How about Phlox, quite a few types and colors to choose from, there are some shorter cultivars as well as taller ones, Coreopsis, Veronica, Dianthus, Geraniums, there's lots to choose from.

Phlox was my first thought too. I have also pretty much given up on lilies because of those %#$&! beetles!!

Phlox may be popular with the bunnies since ground hogs like them. They don't seem bothered by voles in my garden. You can always protect perennials with a ring of wire fencing around the lower portion.

I was thinking that one of the lower growing Hydrangea paniculata cultivars might work there. Long season of blooms ('Little Quickfire' followed by 'Bobo' would be longest, late June to freeze), rock hardy, loves sun. Other choices include 'Little Lamb', and 'Little Lime' and start about 3-4 weeks after LQF and Bobo. You may need to give these a chicken wire ring for the first season as well or spray with a repellent. I haven't had issues with H. paniculata with voles, even in seriously infested beds.

NHBabs - good idea re the hydrangeas - I used 'Bobo' to replace a clump of white Phlox 'David'. 'Tiny Tuff Stuff' is a very nice, very small hydrangea that I'm pleased with - although it may be too small to be considered a lily-substitute!

I have been having a retro gladioli moment. I realise that this may well cause some gardeners to come out in hives but after a long exploration with the sometimes tricky species, I caved in and planted an enormous swathe of garden hybrids from the dainty nanus, dalenii,primulinus right through to those huge 4footers with the dahlias (now there's a thought) for continual picking. True, you need to pop in a handful of bulbs every fortnight or so throughout April and May...but I have been enjoying a Dame Edna revival and am enjoying flouting the good taste rules as well.

Ooh Camp - I love glads in the vase! I don't have enough sun to have a cutting garden, but if I ever get that house on a couple acres that is my goal and start a cutting garden, glads will definitely be growing there! It is a joy when they start coming in for the season at the market, nothing like a large vase of glads to make a statement on the table :0)

penstemons are rather good too, Shannon, especially if you go for the finer leaved (and hardier) garden hybrids - such as the classic Garnet. Long season of flowering with minimal deadheading, flower earlier than phlox and seem to have none of the mildew/eelworm issues which can plague garden phlox. Super easy to propagate so just buy a couple and take lots of cuttings...which will also have time to put on a little show in a decent summer season. I rarely make suggestions as gardens are so personal and subjective but I am feeling pensive and remorseful after savage poppy venting on another thread.
