Your favorite coffee cup
Comments (24)The first qualification for me to like a coffee mug is that its sides should gently round down into the bottom and it should not be too heavy. Such mugs are not necessarily very easy to find in this country, and my favorite few (that are left) are from Japan. I hate the thick-sided generic type of mug that looks like a cut-off cylinder with a round disc of a bottom stuck on it. But even when I find one of an acceptable shape and weight, I like it best if it has pretty colors or pictures of animals on it. I have two with pale vegetables on them, one with pigs, and one with pink and white stripes....See MoreDo You Like Art Books? Do You Have or Display "Coffee Table" Book
Comments (32)Outside, I enjoy those books too--- my late FIL went to school with Ferrol Sams and we love his novels. I hadn't realized he wrote essays as well. "When attending art shows, I swear off coffee table books but I am weak." We share that weakness, lol. Seems I am "always" never going to buy another huge book... Beagles, that room is fantastic, and I do see your pile of books peeking out from under that chair to the left :-) I'm with you on the kindle, but every now and then I like to hold a real book. Even though I find myself pushing the edge of the page instead of turning it (hanging head). No screen can reproduce the heft and color of those prints in large books, there is something about a good quality art print that is somehow more convincing than an image on a screen. Sloe gin, over the past decade or so I've seen many people putting lovely shelving in their dining rooms to combine functions or simply bring books into a room that doesn't often see them. I love that look, of a literary dining room! And your basket sounds eminently practical, we use our shagreen boxes and ceramic bowls for the same purpose--- the "stuff" has got to be corralled somehow. I have seen that Circus book, Robo, and the Atomic Ranch book also, they are both marvelous! It's clear that our collective enjoyment of these tomes is at least partly for the esthetic quality of the books themselves in addition to the content. I suppose that's what makes them "useful" decor :-) In some cases they might function purely as decor, as the leather books you've used, tinam. Have you seen the book purses that are so popular in some circles? Kate Spade has or had a few, and there's quite a cottage industry on Etsy making real old books into small handbags. They aren't a tenth big enough for me, but I love looking at them!...See MoreDo you have favorite dishes - as in plates & bowls?
Comments (51)Not long ago, I was at Old Time Pottery and got two very heavy high gloss square plates. They are big and different looking, I use them on our very square small table just for the two of us. They never bounce around in the dish washer either. Food looks so pretty on them. But when Linens & Things was clearing the shelves, I bought 2 plates of every color in their earthenware line, along with some all colored quilted place mats. With gold chargers and white salad plates sitting in them, they make the round traditional table in DH's cape dining room really cheerful. Those plates are heavy too. For DH, I have been collecting pieces of his mama's china, a bone color with a simple gold band, and that is used for family dinners at his house. Dishes are fun, and not a serious issue, but a chance to add color to a very white/black kitchen. I have a lot of Pfalzgraff Naturewood, but am gradually giving it to my DIL who still likes it. So many dishes, so little time!...See MoreMug or cup & saucer?
Comments (17)I'm another coffee drinker, but if I'm ill, I crave tea. That might be because my Mom always gave me tea and toast when I was sick, as a child. I drink both from a mug, but it has to be glass or ceramic, no plastic or....shudder, Styrofoam. when I was a young married wife we had a neighbor who was from England. She would invite me over for tea, and it was so delightful because she always made a production of the preparations, such as, hot the pot, right temperature of the water and measuring out the loose tea. Then of course there was the tea cozy, sort of a quilt for the teapot to keep it hot. She served small sandwiches or tiny sweets, and of course the tea was served in a beautiful cup and saucer. What a sweet memory that is....See Moremorz8 - Washington Coast
