This is one of my weaknesses. I've got probably 20 coffee cups from the standard ceramic style with handle to the "thermosized" easy-grip models from travels to favorite cities. My current favorite has a 50's cartoon-style illustration of a lady with the caption "Frugal is such an ugly word." I love to shop and THIS could very well be my motto. lol

My favorite one is a ceramic mug with a Far Side cartoon on it - three dinosaurs standing around smoking cigarettes with the caption reading "The real reasons dinosaurs are extinct."

Dirtdiver, if you still have your cup from 1984 you're more graceful than I am, that's for sure...just recently had to order a new supply here due to chipping/breaking. All plain white except for one set redstriped. Needed a variety because DH and I are both fussy LOL and this way we can both have a couple of "favorites". No logos or cartoons here... prefer plain white stoneware.josh

I still have a long shelf of decorated mugs... a collection of presents from various co-workers and friends (a box of too-common mugs went to yard sale several years ago). My favorite is marked "Imari" but has a multicolored geometric pattern unlike most Imari. DH's favorite is an oversized mug by Royal Worcester, with plums and cherries painted on.

My hot drink of choice is cocoa, preferably presented in a clear glass mug of modernistic, unadorned shape; purchased I-don't-remember-where in 1995 to replace a shattered glass mug molded into the shape of an open tulip blossom (gift, 1980). My cold drinks are decanted into the last of a set of royal blue 16 oz tumblers, maybe made by Rubbermaid, purchased in the very early '70's. Have you noticed that nowadays tumblers rarely come in 16 oz size?

Meldy, get thee to a Starbucks! lol That's where most of my aforementioned souvenir tumbler-shaped travel mugs come from. Definitely no shortage of 16-oz. size models.

I have several favorites...but the caveat is that it has to be big enough to hold a double shot of Senseo coffee.
During a lot fo the year, I use either red Waechestersbach large mug, or a souvenier mug of Agency Iowa with Grant Wood's American Gothic in it.
But when it gets to be maybe October 5th or so I break out the Halloween mugs. I have 3 Waecehstersbach Halloween mugs, 2 with pumpkins and one with a ghost, then it's almost Time for the Christmas mugs. I have a bunch but my fave is another Waechestersbach with NOEL on it....and then we get into the Valentine mug...
I have a beautiful flower mug that a friend gave me which is my favorite summer mug...
But...alas I have no Easter mug!

I used one that belonged to my mother for years,a simple all green mug but finally the inside of it began to crack. I found one at the Philadelphia Museum of Art that was huge with an Andrew Wyeth print on it...all beige and white,and I love it. Then I went to a Renoir exhibit and got another one,with one of his prints on it. I'm soon going to be going to the Frida Kahlo exhibit and will probably bring home another one. These mugs hold almost 2 cups of coffee.

I only drink decaf coffee :( now, at coffee joints around town. I recycle their paper cups. I know I should bring my own and reuse them, but instead they pile up in my car. So I have none, except those which go with my china. I love to bring out the coffee and china after a meal when we have company over. It feels so different than paper, earthenware, other ceramic mugs feel. Elegant. That reminds me, I have two black on the outside, white on the inside, gold rimmed mugs at work I use with company. I like those. Evidently my mug use is to limited to feeling pampered.

Mine is ........... stolen from a Denny's back in 1993. We all went out after a school play. We all ordered coffee (because, everyone drank coffee back in the days of Nirvana) and there were probably 12 of us... there were 2 mugs left on the table when we left. lol I don't know how we got away with it.

I always used a Scio Pottery cream colored round mug, with a little ring shaped handle. They were made initally in the 1930's as cheap pottery in a near by local town. During the depression an enterprising businessman sweept into town and opend up this pottery and gave everyone work. They made common dinner sets and had themed stuff. All available at the 5 and dime. The were stamped with USA on the bottom. I remember going with my grandma to replace her broken mugs. They were 5 cents. Pottery long ago put out of business by cheap imports. I don't use my last remaining mug because they do break easily.

At home I use a big mug with the logo of the watershed conservancy distirct on it, which might get me tarred and feathered in certain areas because they are involved in a big controversy about assessing everyone in the district. At work I have my Grumpy mug the dd brought me from D-world a few years back. I also have a Grumpy sweatshirt the dh bought me. Do you think they are trying to tell me something?

BTW, to the original poster, could you keep the mug you love as a pencil cup or something, isntead of throwing it out?

Tisha, thanks for enabling my packrattiness! Pencil cup it might become. By the way, I have your equivalent of a Denny's cup--mine is from Steak and Shake, circa college. I don't remember if I lifted it or if it came from the housemate who actually worked there. Could be either one. We weren't always sober when we ate there. It's nice and thick, pleasingly retro, very old-school diner. But my favorite it is not.

Over the years we've accumuated enough mugs that I periodically have to force myself to get rid of some of them. Currently, I'm using a bright yellow coffee cup, mainly because it doesn't hold too much! Unless I'm eating something sweet -- or chocolate -- my coffee consumption has dropped dramatically the last two years.

However, my favorite is a brownish-colored, earthenware mug I bought to replace one I accidentally broke at the school where I worked. That was in the mid-70s when each staff member had a slot to keep his/her personal mug in. At the end of the school year, when it had not been claimed by anyone, I took it home! Gosh, that mug must be over 30 years' old.

I now like to fill it with ice cream with a little Bailey's poured over it! So much for my coffee-drinking habit!

We have so many mugs that I have had to get serious about keeping just the ones we want to keep. People bring us mugs all the time for little gifts. It depends on the drink and where I use it. I have a huge flat one a friend got me at her garden center. It goes up to the g'house with me because it's hard to tip and lasts awhile. I drink hot tea in that one.

The one I use for coffee, if I have it in the a.m. is a footed, gold rimmed one with a sheep on the front I picked up in Dorset England. Just the right size, as a little coffee goes a long way with me.

My hot cocoa mug is one my sister got me two decades ago. It is a zodiacal mug for the sign Scorpio. Says I am shrewd in business and shall go far, because of my total lack of ethics. Or the pig mug with Hogs and Quiches on it I bought for hubby, or the rocket science mug with the formulae all over it my DD got me. I pitched a mug my DH brought back with him from Texas, the logo on it was mis-spelt and it bugged me no end.

I've got several coffee cups, but my favorite shows a map of the London Underground subway system. I've had it at least ten years. It has a tiny chip now, but I don't care.

And speaking of which, mine is no more. It slipped out of my hand as I was walking back to the kitchen for a refill this morning & broke into about a zillion pieces. The first thing I thought of as it happened was this thread.

Andie, I'm sorry your cup is, um, extinct! I feel like I jinxed you or something.

I can't help suggesting, Andie, that it's time to shop for a new cup because...frugal is such an UGLY word. lol

The first qualification for me to like a coffee mug is that its sides should gently round down into the bottom and it should not be too heavy. Such mugs are not necessarily very easy to find in this country, and my favorite few (that are left) are from Japan. I hate the thick-sided generic type of mug that looks like a cut-off cylinder with a round disc of a bottom stuck on it.

But even when I find one of an acceptable shape and weight, I like it best if it has pretty colors or pictures of animals on it. I have two with pale vegetables on them, one with pigs, and one with pink and white stripes.

We have so many coffee mugs here that I don't need to buy a new one. I just need to make a different one from our collection my favorite.

I used to have bunches of coffee MUGS. I've been relocating them lately, if you know what I mean.

My two favorites are the huge ones given to me by
2 different friends. One is red with dots. the other is pink, both have crowns on the front with (The Queen).

Like many of you, it depends on the use.

A Campbell's soup mug is used for milk and Oreos/chocolate chip cookies.
Holds lots of milk and has a big top for dunkin'.

Hot chocolate mug is a little heavy with straight sides.
Good for wrapping cold hands around.

A Flamingo mug for coffee.

Seasonal cup with Bunny and pansies for Easter.

Seasonal mug with Jack-o-lanters for Halloween.

Seasonal mug for Fall/Thanksgiving.

Seasonal cup for Christmas especially for wassil.

I LOVE seasonal dishes.
I think it makes the meals more special and the food taste better.

Have a lot of mugs, some with cats dressed up like gangsters from the 20s to the 40s used for tea and occasionally coffee. Mostly use an A&W glass mug for morning cappuccino, I like to see the layers. Big, plain, round bottom mugs for soup with room for crackers.

Remember when I counted them and came up with 70 some. Still haven't weeded out but we are getting closer to having a yard sale. Now that is a scary thought.
