To-go coffee and tea- are the cups too hot for your hands?

Sometimes they are for me. As much as I like to cuddle up with a hot cup they can be too hot. Or too cold, in the warmer months.

So I found a simple little pattern for these- little fabric cup cozies. And since we haven't done this for a while, I've made 4 to give away, so if you'd like a chance at one, sign up here. I'll have Woody draw names out of a basket after everyone's had a chance to sign up if they want to try for one.

Also, when you sign up, list your favorites in order so I can try to get to you the one you like best. Since they're laid out like a compass, use N, S, E or W to designate, please.

The top one (N) is tea fabric and the lining is a red dot fabric, red on red.

The bottom one (S) is fruit-bottomed ladies at the beach with a pineapple lining.

The one on the right (E) is black with coffee cups and the lining is purple with coffee beans.

The one on the left (W) is black coffee/latte fabric with a hot orange/pink lining. They all have elastic closures which makes them somewhat universal for normal sized cups. Probably won't fit a Big-Gulp, though! lol

Oh, no I'm not, Deb! lol I found a pattern online and used it, it's not my idea at all! I do wish I'd thought of it, though, because it's so simple to make and really quite useful. I just got back from a road trip that entailed lots of drinks and mine worked great on hot and cold drinks, and kept condensation down to a minimum, too. Thanks for thinking I'm more clever than I am, though. ;)

If anyone wants the pattern, I can post a link for you after I find it again. Or just take one of the cardboard ones and trace it off, layer your two fabrics and batting together, lay out 2 hair elastics, stitch, turn, press, topstitch and sew on 2 buttons. Or use velcro. I like the button/elastic best, though, as it doesn't get that bulk that velcro would have.

I like the Fat bottomed girls one the best. I can relate!

Other than that, they are all really nice.

I hope I don't insult anyone here. If I do, it's really not intended and I apologize in advance. The only thing in common between coffee and tea is both have caffeine. Although, some more than others. Other than that, please don't compare coffee with tea. One is a bean and the other is a leaf! Beans, you may freeze them, leaves, you don't. Think about it, would you freeze lettuce? Even if they've dried up? The moisture created in the freezer will ruin the tea. As for floral tea, if the flowers are not mixed in with the tea leaves, it is not tea and of course, do not contain caffeine. It's considered under tea in a sense that you'd add hot water to the dried flowers for serving. To preserve tea, as beanthere_dunthat mentioned, keep in a dry, cool and dark area (away from the sun). If you can, vacuum pack the tea in smaller quantity, it's the best way to preserve them longer. Then, place the tea packages in double-lid containers. Avoid clear glass containers which allow light going through. Ceramic or stainless steels are fine. As for how long they'd last? That depends on the type of tea. Remember, Pu-erh tea is priced as they aged. Similar to wine, the older they are, the more costly they are. As with any food, leaving the tea leaves in whole would preserve its flavour longer than chopped it or grind it down into small pieces. That's one of the reason that many of us serious tea drinkers prefer whole tea leaves vs. small chopped up tea leaves in tea bags. Although, I do drink various types. As for preparation, use spring water if you can or filtered drinking water. This would help to bring out the most flavor and aroma of the tea. Avoid using tea bags or stainelss steel strainers for these do not allow the tea leaves to expand enough in order to release the flavor. The temperature of the water depends on the type of tea. cloud_swift had mentioned it above. You can find more details from tea vendors website. Most would recommend you the water temperature for your choice of tea. Do a Google search and you'd find plenty of info. Most important thing to remember, when the oxygen content in the water is reduced, the tea will taste flat. This is the reason why you wouldn't want the water to boil too long. Black, Pu-erh and Oolong teas are washed in hot water (barely boiling if you don't use a thermometer) once or twice before serving to allow the dried leaves to open. Basically, pour hot water into the tea leaves for about 20 seconds, then, pour the water out. Once they've been infused once or twice, you'd be able to taste the true flavor better on the next infusion. The more they're infused, the more intense the flavor and aroma would be. Of course, there's a limit of how many infusions each tea can have before the flavor is used up. You wouldn't need to do this with Green tea. When infusing green tea, use barely boiling water, then let it sit for about 5 minutes to cool it down a little before adding the water into the tea. If you have an interest in tea, I'd recommend watching the history of "Tea" that was shown on Modern Marvels by the History Channel. You can purchase the DVD at the link below. Tea is a wonderful and mysterious drink. It inspired many famous poets in the Asian world. It warms you if you're cold; yet, it also cools you when you're hot. It releases all of your stress and relaxes you. It calms you down when you're overwhelmed. It satisfies you in ways that no other drinks can. Next thing to learn is which teapot to use with which tea =o) I have one for Osmanthus Oolong tea, one for jasmine green tea and one for other flavor teas. Ok, that would be another thread. But until I get around to grocery shopping again, something I don;t enjoy much when shopping for one, I must pick up some coffee filters. I usually brew in my 4-cup electric Mr. Coffee. I really do not appreciate instant coffee. Today I used for the first time a French press individual contraption that I bought about two years ago at the boat store. It was a fine cuppa j. When I get a gas range, I will probably use the antique Cajun "biguns" which do the French style coffee akin to espresso. I have 3 of those tiny pots, make a cup each. Their style so reminds me of my days along the bayou, during the years I worked in the oil fields of coastal Louisiana. I can smell the coffee and the salty marshes now.

My percolator makes great coffee. I enjoy a cup or two each morning. I wished I was borned in the US and would have known about coffee percolator a long ago. What a difference a cup of coffee from a percolator makes. It's smooth and flavourable. Another tip is to add a sprinkle (1 cup) or a dash (5 cups)of salt into the coffee ground. It will take the bitterness away from the coffee and you won't taste the salt. Unless, the coffee is processed for the bitter taste.

Those are cute! I would use it every day. Sign me up! Even when I make it at home, I take it w/me in a paper cup (way too many lost travel cups, I leave them everywhere I go).

Oh I think you are smart!!!

I have trouble using a sewing machine...takes me a while to sew anything. I love to quilt but do it all by hand.
I'd love to have the pattern!!! Anyone that can sew is very talented in my book!

What a great idea, I'm always complaining that those cups are too darned hot!
I love the fat-bottomed ladies fabric but would be a very happy camper to get any one of those so please put my name in the hat Pinky.

Since I don't want bad karma, I won't be selling these on Etsy. I am thinking of a different way to make them, though, so you never know what might develop. For now, I'm happy to make them as little gifties.

I'll improve the odds for others by not playing because I don't get take-out drinks, but I wanted to say you did a fabulous job. They're gorgeous!!

I'm not entering the drawing, because I am one of the very happy winners of your cell phone purse. I just LOVE that and it is usually the only purse I carry. Everything I need (except tissues) fits in there. I get comments on it all the time.

I just wanted to tell you that I think you cozies are beautiful and I may try to make one myself. I always love your fabrics.

I buy coffee at 7-11. They have cardboard holders (for free)that slip over the paper cups. Yours are much cuter. As I said before, I like the big-bottom ladies!

Wow, those fruit ladies are popular. I also refer to them as "fruity patooties". lol

Clare, the fabric is by Elizabeth's Studio, if you look here you might find some you like. I am using the striped one. I found it in Branson, MO, at a quilt shop last year. If that link doesn't work, just search under "fruit ladies" and you'll find it. And Ebay is always an option.

Joann, sorry I didn't see this! I got the fabric online, it's by Elizabeth's Studio. Look on Ebay, too. "fabric fruit ladies" usually brings it up. The pattern/tutorial is posted above, about 1/3 of the way down.

Local quilt shops are fun, too, they usually have a novelty fabric section. I like those best.
