Thats an interesting point you bing up there dmlove. I never thought of that. Although our current side table lamps are those cheap IKEA frosted rectangular lights that sit right on the table and are open on top. My wife seems to read OK with them (I guess I should verify this...). The pendants I had in mind would be lightly frosted. I was thinking the Hampton Bay Architect if I can get it in Canada. kats- I've been thinking about your space and while I like the pull down style pendant lamp, I think it's too "lightweight" for your space. The soaring windows, strongly colored wood and copper table need some more oomph IMO. Check out the lights by Meyda, a company based in Oriskany, NY that makes a lot of their fixtures in the US (their stained glass is from China) and offers some neat stuff. The link below is to their on line catalog of rustic type lighting, and it's in Adobe, so it's a bit laborious to scroll through, but most on line retailers don't have their entire collection. We have a few of their lights in our house and are pleased with the quality of the product and the style. Hopefully whom ever put in the your hall light left extra wire in the electric box in the ceiling and you will not have to rewire. Look around your Lowes or Home depot they might have some gold chain. Even though gold is coming back in style, sometimes it is still hard to find and so many different colors of gold. Or if your husband installed it maybe he saved the remaining chain. You picked a nice fixture. Look for something that complements it. From your pictures the foyer looks open to the living area. I would just go smaller. The shadows Sam is talking about, is the shadow the light casts on the ceiling and walls when it is on. Yours is fine. I seen one light shadow that looked like a boob on the ceiling. lol Oh yes I am for easy maintenance and comfort.

I will say Edison bulbs are the most horrible lighting ever and there is areason they went the way of the dodo . I like good lighting that actually lights the table and the other thing with Edison buls is they cast a yellow glow on everything so colrs you love in the daytime become yucky at night. I need to see the rest of your home this is one space and needs to work with the others I am getting no feel for your style except for atable.
