A little help identifying my Japanese maple please..

I believe it's a crimson queen, but am not sure.. was there when i bought the house 13 years ago, i just trim it back in the fall (which i now know should be in the spring.. ) Anyway, i just want to make sure before i find a couple of seedings to add next to it.

P.S. why are crimson queens so hard to find? or is there another name?

Also, would i be better to try to root some cuttings?

It could be 'Crimson Queen', it could be 'Garnet', it could be 'Red Dragon' or any of a couple of dozen other red weeping dissectums. It's impossible to say with any degree of certainty. The distinctions between the individual cultivars can be extremely subtle and even JM authorities are reluctant to assign specific ID's.

As to any seedlings, these will be just generic Acer palmatum seedlings regardless of parentage. Seedlings of named forms can be extremely variable in appearance so could look like parent(s) but could also look distinctly different, even down to leaf color. Named forms are only propagated asexually, usually by grafting. JM cuttings are notoriously difficult to strike.

It may be a regional thing, but Crimson Queen is a pretty common cultivar, one of the most popular of the red leafed dissectums, and shouldn't be all that difficult to locate. My nursery sells dozens each season and most mail order sources offer them as well. You can also find them at box stores, however I am always skeptical about the accuracy of the labeling of JM's purchased from anywhere other than a reputable JM grower/dealer.

krazy karma, just back out of this post and look at the top of the listings of postings of this forum. You'll see a heading "ON TOPIC DSSCUSSIONS" and next to it in smaller type, "Gallery". If you click on this with your mouse, it will direct you to the photo gallery for this forum (although it is perfectly acceptable to post photos in the discussions as well) and you will located linanm's pics. Unfortunately I have no enlightenment as to the ID :-) I'm not sure it is either Beni Maiko or Shindeshojo as my experience with both of these is that the incredibly red spring growth remains intact until quite a bit later in the season before changing gradually to green. Both of mine are in full leaf of the moment and neither has anything close to green on it. I guess it maybe quite likely that they could color up differently in SoCal's different climate, though.

David-- You want me to tell you all my secrets:) I watch almost everything I can find online regarding maples, ebay included. Laceleaf is the only seller of Pink Lace that I have seen. A supposed seedling of Viridis that is more vigorous and has pink in its spring and new growth color. The sale of that plant has always tweaked me as I think it is illegitimate as a variety name--heck most of the seedlings of Virids exhibit those qualities. Anyway, not to detract from your purchase. Your Beni otake photos also looks like their plant. I also think Rob at nishiki is getting a bit much for his plants. They used to be quite large and worth the money, now with his increase in sales, the plants are going out before they have adequate size on them. Instead of separating himself from everyone else, he is selling small plants for acution prices to keep up with the demand. Truth be told, all of the auction trees have gotten pretty small. If I buy and auction tree, I try to stay below $15 and below $20 if I really want it---they are just to small to pay big money and buy sight unseen. MJH

With nearly 1000 registered cultivars, many with almost imperceptible differences, it is virtually impossible to accurately ID a Japanese maple other than those that are extremely unique. Even JM experts are not inclined to assign specific cultivar ID's. And a great many grown and/or sold are seed grown so no identification beyond just the species exists. It would certainly help to see a photo of the tree in its entirety but I'd suspect this may be a laceleaf full moon maple, Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' - the leaf is not very characteristic of any Acer palmatum. Did the tree not come properly tagged and identified?

Yes, as long as the drainage is good, it should be fine. It is pretty much the equivalent of a couple of days of a constant downpour :-)) As long as the soil didn't puddle up and the water drained promptly, this is far less of a threat to the tree than it would have been to skip watering for a week or two!!
