Please Identify Japanese Maple in Gallery

Hi all, I posted two pictures in the gallery of a Japanese maple. I bought it without a tag and would like to know which one it is. Thank you for your help, Linda

From your photos, your tree looks like one of Japanese maple varieties that leaf out with very bright red leaves that then turn green, such as Shin deshojo or Beni maiko. From the photos, it looks more like Beni maiko to me because the green leaves are so bright. The green leaves on my Shin deshojo are more olive green in color than bright green.

I agree with Dawgie...it looks very much like a Beni Maiko or a Shin Deshojo. How much sun is it getting?

It's NOT a 'Tamukeyama', that's for sure. But what it may be precisely is nearly impossible to tell. Please see your other post for details :-) Sorry, but that's a huge risk you run when purchasing untagged or mis-tagged JM's. You may never determine the specific cultivar.

I have scores of seedlings per year. Including many in full sun. In fact I've begin selecting a few here and there, though I don't really think the world needs anymore JM cultivars. Early this summer I moved one that has an interesting black versus green patterning. It looks almost checkered. I sometimes have forgotten ones I meant to keep and sprayed them with herbicide. LIke one that had a slate-stone like appearing leaf a couple years ago. Hard to explain, wish I'd at least photographed it. Not to brag or say "my garden is better than yours" but it is interesting how slight differences in soil (mostly) and climate (slightly) can make a difference. In my teens I helped garden a large estate in Northern Virginia that had many yews and hemlocks. I saw berries and cones on them. In years of weeding, I never saw a yew or hemlock seedling. In my garden here, I get many yew seedlings and even a few hemlock seedlings. A few miles from my house, there are wild Kalmias, growing right along the highway, in full sun! (Rt. 40) Frankly it's not necessarily a good thing because I have to deal with many bad seedlings too like (silver) maple, ashes galore, Ulmus parviflora now that I have one of those, etc. etc. That's why I have to use a lot of roundup. Bare ground here will just fill with tree seedlings. I'll feel like I've reached seedling nirvana when I get rhododendron seedlings. And they do self-seed in the gardens of Long Island collectors. But again that climate is even milder than mine so it may never happen.

Looks like it is "Waterfall" Viridis. The full name is Acer palmatum Waterfall Viridis. "Dissectum" in the name (if it is there) means the lacy, finely dissected leaves. Congratulations, you discovered the magic of Japanese Maples! Very easy to get hooked on, collect them. Visit the Maple Forum , you can find beautiful pictures in the Gallery section.

It's definitely not Beni Otake - that is a linearlobum type with very narrow, bamboo-like leaves. In fact, the name translates to "red bamboo" :-) Did you plant the tree or did it spring up on its own? That would make a difference but generally, with very few exceptions, cultivars of Japanese maples are extremely difficult to ID. The differences between individual cultivars can be very slight and even JM authorities are hesitant to assign specific ID's. I can tell you that based on the current growth habit and the spacing of the branches with respect to trunk diameter, this will grow into a good sized tree, probably 15-20 feet, perhaps more. Looks a bit like a Bloodgood clone/seedling.

Thank you for the responses, it does seem to look like the ones you mentioned. I will post another of the tree, it isn't very big. Karma, To look at the picture in the gallery, it is the first two posts (right now anyway) under linanm, just click on the link to photo after opening.

I can't even find THAT. I go to the gallery, and there isn't a place to find a post. I typed Japanese Maple in the gallery search, and only one post came up. It isn't yours.

krazy karma, just back out of this post and look at the top of the listings of postings of this forum. You'll see a heading "ON TOPIC DSSCUSSIONS" and next to it in smaller type, "Gallery". If you click on this with your mouse, it will direct you to the photo gallery for this forum (although it is perfectly acceptable to post photos in the discussions as well) and you will located linanm's pics.

Unfortunately I have no enlightenment as to the ID :-) I'm not sure it is either Beni Maiko or Shindeshojo as my experience with both of these is that the incredibly red spring growth remains intact until quite a bit later in the season before changing gradually to green. Both of mine are in full leaf of the moment and neither has anything close to green on it. I guess it maybe quite likely that they could color up differently in SoCal's different climate, though.
