Plant sale June 6 in Pinellas Park, FL

(A neighbor sent this to our neighborhood news this week.)

The Rare Plant Network is holding its annual spring plant sale under the oaks behind the Good Samaritan Church, 6085 Park Blvd., Pinellas Park. Tomorrow, Saturday, June 6, 9 am to 1 pm. Rare and unusual plants, sun/shade, including angel trumpets, plumerias, cactus, succulents, irises, lilies, bromeliads, bamboos, chenille plants, coleus, crotons, ferns, alocasia, colocasia, gingers, heliconias, screw pines, vines, butterfly, natives, herbs, aroids, rare flowering plants, cuttings and bare-root, yard art, garden books, etc. Requesting entry donations of non-perishable foods or $1 for the free food bank. Parking at the baseball field.

Hi Irma,

I'm glad you had a good time! I Google Mapped the location a couple of days ago, pondering if I could make it down, but decided 4 hours each way was a bit far. But the title "Rare Plant" definitely got my antenna up and my wheels turning, haha! Good purchases: it's impossible to have too many caladium. :) Are they a new or interesting variety?

Never heard of Solanum wendlandii, so I had to look it up in Google Images. They are so pretty!!!!!! Here's a link for anyone else that wants to take a peek:

EDIT: By the way, the common names for it are Costa Rica Nightshade and Giant Potato Vine. The first one sounds a lot more romantic!

Well, it was fun. Limited my spending to 3 pots of blooming caladium (total $6!). Lots of interesting plants and people, as always. Best part was showing Cheryl (remember "yacheryl"?) a cutting of my mystery plant and it was, after all, one she had sold me, Solanum wendlandii. I had planned to rip it out, as it grows aggressively and has hooks or thorns. Cheryl says it will flower profusely and gorgeously if I fertilize and sun it. So, I will!

I was slightly disappointed this year. For the first time I did not buy anything from the botanical garden, only from outside vendors. One vendor said that fewer vendors ventured out this year because the fall show was so poor. The fall show was late, but I enjoyed it. The gardens looked as beautiful as I have ever seen them this weekend. And the jambalaya was back.

I'll definitely go to the spring sales and the butterfly festival is a favorite lunch time activity. I am looking for butterfly weed, my seedlings are still pretty small and I'd like to have some more mature plants - do you think they will have any? I haven't even gotten to see all of the new facilities yet, I usually wonder around on my lunch hour but I've been so busy this year. Anxious to see the woodland garden this year, I heard it is really nice. Thanks for the reminder Jean

Thanks, Carol. Cheryl and the rare plants people are gung-ho plant pursuers. A few years ago she told me they charter a bus annually to spend 2 days shopping SE Florida growers!

I always have fun at the plant sales and like Carol said if it is rare it is even better, for me would be a long drive too to get there.
I heard of the Giant Potato vine before at the Leu gardens sale, it does look very pretty and I agree that Costa Rica night shade sounds better.
Irma, it is good that you had a good time, bought some, and identify a mystery plant. I can say gardener's mission accomplished.

I just seen this post! Thanks Irma !!!

The plant sale was a great success.

And we brought a lot of food/etc in for the Church's Food Pantry.

We had 14 vendors selling all different types of plants.

I sell blooming plants, vines, shrubs and trees

Our next plant sale is Sat, Oct 3.
