I am thinking about putting some bare root roses right in the ground

Is there any way to shade the plant until it can take the sun? I can't think of anything where the heat won't build up. But some of these bare root plants from Brecks have white, new growth that is a few inches long, and it doesn't look like they would take too kindly to sun. Has anyone else done this, and how are they doing? (Summersrhythm has put some directly into the ground, but I didn't ask her if she covered them)

Someone once said that they use laundry baskets that they buy at the dollar store to shade newly planted plants/roses after putting them in the ground. I've never seen what they look like, but its a thought. They have holes on the sides so it allows for good ventilation. I thought it was a good idea. I'd get white ones to be sure they remain cool.

You'll need to be sure the remain well watered but otherwise it should do ok if you keep it shaded and well watered.

I've planted many such bare root roses in the ground without even covering them and they did just fine. Sometimes the tender new growth dies off but as long as the roots are kept well hydrated, they will send out new shoots quickly which then grow out properly. The practice of covering them up is a good, perfect one but I haven't quite done it much just as a matter of convenience.

Thank you all. They actually were in dark colored soil (bare root bag) that I kept very moist until they were in the ground and have kept my eye on watering them now that they are in the ground, daily. Around me, I've only seen the saw dust bare root at one place but they were out of Z.D. at the time. I bought them from a very reputable and well know nursery and the guy actually went into a holding area to get me the best ones. I'll snap off the new growth as you all said. Question: Would some alfalfa meal on top of the soil be of help now or just wait? I read someone else's post about this. I wouldn't do the tea but just do the meal on top and water. For my other 19 rose bushes (inherited when we bought this house), when should I do this alfalfa thing? Any BEST time to do this? Since many of the older established roses are of unknown varieties, is there any way to tell what TYPE of rose they are since I noticed that the new leaves in some are dark almost purpleish and in other bushes they are bright green? I was just wondering about them. So far I've taken out some of the bushes that had no smell or where just shrub roses etc. that I didn't like and picked out new ones that I wanted. Just something I noticed and thought you all might have some insight into this. Fun learning all this stuff. I'm soaking up all the knowledge I can right now. I'm a sponge much to my husband's pocket's dismay.... ;D

This bed is between my house and a 7ft. block wall so winds won't get to it. I put it in the ground in the middle of Feb. We can't get bare roots here til after Xmas so I think I'm fine. I guess I was worried that the other bare roots were up and running (the others did have a few new leaves when I bought it and this one didn't)and this one has done nothing. Maybe I'll back off the water for a day since I've watered it daily and do the mulch around it and the paper bag thing. Hadn't heard of that, Thanks. How long do you do the paper bag thing? Only at night or 24 hrs a day?

If all canes have gone wrinkled it doesn't look good, but if some part of the cane still are all right it's worth some extra effort. Spray them with water as often as you can, keep soil wet. Protect them from direct sunlight with at fabric or semi-translucent plastic (white or gray), and keep spraing with water. Before you go to bed, focus on the first star you see that night and wish for cloudy, rainy weather ;-)

Bonnie just to let you know that it is usually better to start a new thread especially if the older one has many posts and probably plenty of answers to original poster - and may not be read as often. There is a reason why plants are sold on clearance, and for such low price: most often it is a poor condition of the plant. Stores don't really know (or may have no time) how to care about different plants and succulents suffer usually more since they do not like to sit in wet soil. All plants in the stores get watered at the same time. Buying so many plants in poor condition makes it so much harder to save them - in very short time, you already lost 2. On top of that, the moon cacti are actually 2 plants: one on the bottom is a rootstock (more vigorous plant) and one on top - the colored one - is grafted on it. Colored plant can't survive on it's own since it lacks chlorophyl. It will grow grafted, but quite often doesn't grow more than few years (there are exceptions, but not that many). The soil they are in is likely not so much week, but water-retaining. It is probably peat that either stays too wet or too dry - very difficult to keep right moisture. Succulents need good drainage. You need to read about better mix to use for them. This thread has posts that mention better mix (even a photo of it), and you can search the forum for many, many more. Getting proper mix and containers ready ahead of time would help, so all the plants could be repotted as soon as possible. I am not trying to 'beat you up', just stating few facts. It is difficult to resist a bargain, but dealing with so many plants in poor condition isn't easy.

I plant bare roots right into the ground all the time. I planted 5 or 6 this spring and they're all doing great. If it's not going to go into the 90s or higher you don't really need to shade them. Just plant them and keep them well watered and they should be fine. If you really feel you need to shade them just put a lawn chair over them during the hottest part of the day.

That white new growth will either green up or die back. It's growth that happened in the dark, either in storage or during shipping and usually it's weak growth to begin with. I normally take it right off and don't let the plant waste energy on it. It will grow back stronger and healthier canes quickly.

Cut off any white growth more than an inch long. These have grown in dark conditions. New proper shoots will take their place.

PS. Just saw that Seil above said the same thing. That should teach me to read previous posts before commenting.

I have planted over 130 bare root roses right into the garden this Spring, just planted 10 of them last night. It's not too hot yet in my zone 6a by the Great Lakes here, today's high is in the 70's, tomorrow will be 81. I water them every night after work, no problems at all. Good luck with yours! :-)
