Coordinating Office Furniture - Your Thoughts on These Options

Hello everyone! Hope your summer is off to a great start! I am back and in need of your never-failing advice for my office makeover.

So here's the story: I was browsing a furniture store and fell in love with a desk by Hooker, so I bought it, but it is from a line that was discontinued, so I am unable to get any matching pieces. Here it is (sample room, not mine):

So, obviously, it is a focal point for the room. I am going to have the light fixture swapped for a hanging one above the desk. We really need a file storage piece that can also serve as a spot for our printer, and we would like a second work space in the room as well. I have been struggling to find something that will both fit and coordinate with the main desk shown above.

Here are some other pieces by Hooker that I am considering. Do you think anything here could work? Note that the desks below are 48", while the main one above is over 60".

I have no idea if the painted white of the main desk would be very similar or not with the Sanctuary one above.

I really like the first desk best, and I hope it could work, as going custom may be out of the budget right now.

Your thoughts? Other suggestions?

If you have thoughts about drapery or wall color . . . I know, I'm pushing it now!

I found that re-doing my office was the most difficult room to furnish.

I ended up going with mid-century furnishings, purchased by a guy who paints them and gives them a new life. I actually trash-picked my desk.... and turns out it is a really nice piece by Jens Risom -- similar to the one below... Be open to looking on Craigslist for pieces that can be painted.

Anyway - I love your desk. I did a google search for "French Country Office Furniture" - and came across the file cabinet above.

Are you considering some kind of tall shelving? I needed ample closed storage in my office - do you have a need for storage?

Does the other worktable need to accommodate a chair?

How many windows do you have - are they on just one wall?

Would you consider an accent wall of wallpaper; or all wallpaper?

Do you have hardwood or wall to wall carpet?

Thought you might like to look at the one below. It's contemporary and the lower legs accommodate the pillow mattress and yet he'll still have a wonderfully comfy headboard that he can lean against. Thank you both! I would like to place the desk in the center of the room. The extra desk space would be for a second person, i.e. my spouse to use if we were in the room at the same time, or at least that is what we were thinking. I love the idea of built-ins. That would probably provide a very seamless feel to the whole thing. This space would be around the perimeter of the room. The room is around 13' x 14' maybe. It is a bedroom sized room with a double window. It has a closet, so we can store supplies in there. The extra space would be mostly for workspace and maybe some immediate storage for a few items. We can always use bookshelves too. Love the inspiration pictures. Something like those built-ins but with flat workspace instead of drawers and shelving could work. Do you think cream like the desk or a wood tone like the top of the desk? I am leaning toward cream. I am completely open on wall color, draperies, lighting, etc. The only thing that is for certain is the beautiful desk I posted. Jan

I think the desk is rather dated and if you can, I'd return it for something perhaps in glass, or something not so heavy. The desk should be compact and lightweight, which this one is not. How about a simple rectangular table which would serve a laptop very well. The office chairs are too big for the space. I would not put a run on top of another rug. If the other part of the room is a gym, small furnishings will look less crowded. You can achieve an office space without buying office furniture that is made for a larger, professional outside the home office.

My strong recommendation: continue the wood inside the office. It will give you the best looking result by a long shot even if you are not in love with the existing wood. A real hardwood is easy for a professional to match and blend. Do not, and I cannot stress this enough, do not use any fake imitation wood: laminate, vinyl, tile, etc. One "wood" material will make the other look horrible.

Some options from Wayfair. There are many more coordinated pieces in these three collection than what I'm showing here. Don't know the appearance of your home and your price point, but that first desk from Hooker looks very Habersham Plantation style that we did back in the 80 s. Also check Ballard Designs which has a partners desk in a painted finish.

I would look on CL, buy used, then have it refinished to match your desk..

I went a different direction. I bought a wireless printer and built out a closet with filing cabinets and a printer table so that all of the messy stuff can be behind closed doors when not in use, allowing my pretty desk to be the centerpiece of the room. Would that sort of idea work for you? It's certainly cheaper and easier than trying to find matching furniture.

Your desk appears to be part of Hooker's Chic Coterie line. The entertainment center above is part of that line that might work for you.

This credenza is also part of the same line, Do a search on the line name. There are also some tall display cabinets available.

This is part of the same line that would work great for a printer and provide some storage.

I think the pieces you selected would work fine. Personally, I do not like matching sets, too matchy matchy for me.

jpmom - I love that file cabinet. The site states that a minimum of two items must be purchased though, and I didn't find a second piece.

No tall shelving, as we have a closet with lots of shelving for storage in that room. Yes, the worktable needs to accommodate a chair, likely the same chair as the main desk I showed first. I don't think there will be adequate room for two chairs. We have two windows, connected to one another on one wall in that room, facing the front of the house. The room is carpeted with a monotone neutral, but frieze style carpet. I would love an area rug, but it may not be workable with the carpeting. It is a cold climate up here, and most people have carpet in their homes for warmth. Yes, I would consider an accent wall with wallpaper, however, the walls are somewhat textured.

beverly - I have ordered, with good results, from Wayfair before, and I do like those pieces, especially the last desk. I will check that out, for sure.

cmarlin - I love great Craigslist finds. I have scoured some, but just haven't found the right thing, I guess.

Fun - What a great idea to hide away the printers, etc. We do have a closet in that room, which could work, although I don't think there is an outlet in there. Also, one of the printers (laser) is not wireless, but that could be changed, of course. Great idea. It's possible that could work.

FinallyHome - Yes, Chic Coterie is the Hooker line, indeed. The entertainment center you showed first is beautiful. It is too long, though, for the space we have, unfortunately. I did the online search, and I see the items you listed. Thank you! I will look at their dimensions, etc., as well.

mdln - I agree about the matching sets, the majority of the time. I really do like the first desk and file drawer I posted most. So if that can work, I would like to use it.

I think both the Chatelet collection and the Sanctuary collection would look great with your desk, which I love btw. Since you don't know if the whites will match and you're wanting your desk to be the focus, I might lean a little more towards the Chatelet. I really like the paint color in your desk picture if you could find something close to it. BM Revere Pewter? SW Agreeable Gray? BM Edgecomb Gray?
