1950's, why did they destroy so much?

In recent conversations I have been reminded of the (IMHO) terrible decisions made in the 1950's regarding design and architecture. In our area of Western New York the 1950's saw many older buildings torn down or abandoned, an expressway built through an Olmsted park, a horrible eyesore of a Skyway at the waterfront, etc. We tore down the Larkin building and abandoned the Darwin Martin House (FLW) (almost torn down), etc. I have been told that many wanted an "old" building torn down for the area to look more modern. Now we are spending millions to fix all of this.

Personal opinion, the architecture is ugly from the 50's but my biggest concern is why those who had the power at the time destroyed so much. Did this happen everywhere during the 50's? Why? What were they thinking? Did this happen to this extent in other decades?
