I've got a big problem with ants!

In April, while my husband was out of town, I went behind his back and put down 2 yards of mulch and plunged all my plumeria down into a thick bed of it. lol He hates mulch because of what he feels will become a bug haven. He was right!

A few days ago, I moved one of the pots and found a huge nest of ants. He said that's why he hates mulch. So he got a can of spray and sprayed them. Didn't do any complaining. So that evening I watered really deep... pots and mulch, hoping that would discourage them.

Now, today I moved several more pots and there were nests under every pot! What will I do? What can I use? Should I use a systemic for the pots and the mulch? Is there a granular for regular ole ants like they have for fire ants? Will those granulars for fire ants work for regular ole ants? And the mulched area reaches over to my vegetable garden. What can I use to not worry about the run-off?

I haven't told my husband yet. First, I want to make sure to have a plan of attack. This is so disheartening! To go behind his back and now have such a problem like this! I wanted the mulch to help keep my pots steady in the wind, plus to keep down weeds so that I don't have to move them all the time and weedeat. Now, my pots are full of weeds as well as ants! Argh!

Many people say that ants aren't a problem, overmuch, but I disagree! They love to farm aphids and they nest in pots, ruining the soil. You just wouldn't have believed the amount of ants that I saw today. Wish I had gotten a photo!

Diazinon crystals/bait use to work the best for me. If you sprinkled a little around the nest areas, or areas the ants traveled past they would take the bait back to the next and bam, no more ants. If you baited 1x a season, after 2 or 3 seasons I would not see ants anymore, this was for my apartments. @ my house I have a professional service monthly come out, but even with them treating the outdoor areas I still see ants. Diazinon in LA is banned since the mid 2000's. I tried Grants Ants bait that worked ok, but not as well as the Diazinon. Grants was bought out by Amdro. If you can't get Diazinon, get some grants ants bait, or go to your nursery and ask them for the best ant bait.

Moonie. I wouldn't worry about the ants. I have mulch in half of my back yard. We just put down 3 yards this spring to reinforce what we already had down, and I've never seen a ant mound in mulch in the two years we have lived here. I think the ants are just trying to get out of the rain and using your pots as cover. I have the same thing here. By any chance are you in Texas? If so once this rain goes away the ants will go away.

Thanks for the tip, Elisabeth. I need more potting soil, too, so I can check them out. Oh, MissSherry, I've seen those wasps carry off full size caterpillars, too! The sulphur female was back again, but I didn't see if she was ovipositing or not. At the time, she was nectaring on the Nicotiana I picked up recently - white with a pink tint to the base and calyxes of the flowers. I'm kinda worn slick tonight. Kenna was here today and we had a good time. We have a new stray cat, Lady George (cuz she looks identical to my indoor cat, George) that is very friendly and was obviously feeding wee cats somewhere. She decided she wanted us to try to find them, so we hunted high and low, and she finally found them in a basement next door! She was thrilled and now has in mind to ween and tame them. Oh, my..... I did get to pot up some seedlings of Asclepias viridis and Salvia 'Forest Fire'. I think I'm really going to like this Salvia. It is fire engine red with black calyces - sounds stunning! I've got so many seedlings to pot up, and I'm not going to do this any more in the future, so I'm feeling very obligated to pot up as many of my seedlings as possible, and either give them away to a couple friends here, and probably to Sandy if she wants some, too. I am growing the red flowering Tecoma for the first time, and I think it will look very pretty, too. The Flame Acanthus that I didn't think would come up w/o stratification is coming up well. Note to self: Don't believe everything you read! Have lots of Silene regia (might be good for your meadow, if native in MS as well) to pot up. Lots to keep me busy for a good while anyway. Brenda, it is nice when even family members are enablers, eh? LOL!! I actually keep telling my husband "There's this garden in Western NY that someday we have to go visit!" I would love to see your beautiful garden some day. The different areas you have planted and the variety is amazing. I've been lusting for some more photos from you. Would love to see what you have on file for your veggie garden from last year if you have any time to post some. Goodness! I finally cracked open the catalog for my local nursery who I really like to support. She's a true plantswoman who I so enjoy chatting with, etc. I just sent an email over to her with my "list" (is was a long one) of plants to put aside for me for pickup when they open. It's a terrible habit I have of giving her a list each year for pickup. But my birthday is always right around when she opens, so it's a birthday present, right?!?! LOL!

When I read Veggie Chica's original Q I thought of some ideas we got at a veggie conference on selling herbs, perrenial and annual. We grow many herbs to sell as cut bunches and Basil always tops the list in our area, whether it is sweet or one of the lemons,limes,cinnimon,licorice,opal,red...well you get the picture. But pesto recipes are a great sales booster for basil and I always situate the basil (and cilantro) next to our tomato display because people need to be reminded of the association of the two. But when it comes to the other herbs, we had moderate sales of potted herbs until we took it to a new level in offering mixed herb "SIX PACKS". Six different basils= "PESTO PACK". Combine other herbs to make the "SEASONING PACK", "FRAGRANCE PACK", "MEDICINAL PACK", FLAVOR PACK", "TEA PACK", etc. Start your herbs separately and at different times to allow the packs to all look uniform when you combine them to create the six packs. For instance, dill and cilantro grow much faster than ..... Rosemary, Lavender and Thyme are slow growers. You will be amazed at the increased sales, especially in areas where people associate six packs with beverages.

Thanks, classytchr. Did you plant tulips? Don't know if southern Jersey has many rabbits as we do here in central/coastal part of state. People who have cats say they don't have much of a rabbit problem but not going to get a cat just for that. I could put some catmint into the butterfly garden to do double duty hoping to attract one big cat who wanders the neighborhood even though I go after him with a broom when he shows up while my groundfeeding avian friends are eating. Saw him grab a mole or baby possum once and shooed him away as birds were eating nearby. He took the prey but my birds were warned off. I'm wondering how I'm going to protect all the bulbs I've planted while they're still tender. Know everything I read says rabbits and deer don't eat much aside from tulips but I'll believe that when and if I see it next spring...LOL. There are plenty of daffodils and other narcissus, alliums, crocus, muscari, hyacinths and others I can't remember. It was a veritable bulb binge. I went so far as to put some in bulb cages and layered others in stretched steel wool to keep squirrels, moles, voles, chipmunks and anything else that web sites said could go after bulbs once they were in the ground. If there was a warning option out there I used it. Sufferin' succotash...now to get past those "pesky wabbits"! Most of the bulbs have to go in containers since there isn't much ground not invaded by tree/shrub roots and/or miles of underground vines that remind me of some old horror movie. I've hacked away with an ax and hatchet as much as I can to plant two small beds with bulbs but the rest are going into containers. I've got bubble wrap and "plankets" to cover yet not smother them to try and keep bulbs from heaving in containers as we go through winter/spring. After first really hard freeze I'll put piles of leaves between containers and "plankets" for added insulation until worst of season is over and then uncover them once last freeze passes. Heck, there's over 150 bulbs so something should bloom! Good luck to you too. We'll compare blooming notes come spring!

Hi James. Last night, after reading your post, I thought about using some Amdro granulars because we have some at the garden shop where I work. Now, I've changed my mind. Maybe I'll use some Bayer systemic. This morning, hubs and I moved a few more pots and I was so shocked to see nesting ants all over the place! (NOT lol) He didn't say anthing about them, other than to go get the spray, and he doesn't realize it's not only in that same area. But I realize they are nesting all through the entire area of mulch. I feel like if I use a granular, I will have to move the mulch and all my pots and get it down to the bottom. You can't see hardly any ants along the top of the mulch.
saplumeria - Sorry, I only now realized that my zone and location was no longer attached to my username. I just fixed that. I'm not in Texas and we have had no rain in almost 3 weeks. Yes, ants can cause problems when they become an infestation. In the past I have had ants nest in my pots and affect the soil so that water simply runs through, not getting to the root system.
