Polypropylene Rug... Can I hose it down? or am I dreaming?
Comments (16)About a year ago, I spent over $1000 having about 10 area rugs of different sizes professionally cleaned. When they were returned, I thought they didn't smell clean and their equipment left the pile looking pulled and worn. I mentioned it but the company said that's the way it is. When my dog chose a corner of one of the rugs (made out of 100% olefin) to do his business on, I decided I was not spending any more money. So, took it outside on large slightly sloping clean patio (equivalent to driveways mentioned by other people here) and hosed it like crazy until the water was clear. Then, used some Dawn dishwashing detergent diluted in bucket of water and a broom on backside. Hosed again until clean water again. Carpet was extremely heavy. We struggled to drape it over some patio chairs. Figured we would drag it out to dispose of on bulk garbage day. But, surprisingly, within about 24 hours it was almost dry and there was no smell! $300 rug saved!...See MoreOh no - not another rug question (90% polypropylene 10% chenille)
Comments (0)I bought a rug that is 90% polypropylene & 10 chenille, and discovered the tag says dry clean. I'm just wondering if anyone has experience with cleaning this kind of rug at home. Any other experiences with this kind of rug (not just cleaning)? Thanks in advance. I found a previous post but seems to relate to 100% polypropylene. Comments (5)The problem is we can't see what pad you are considering. I always suggest purchasing a pad that CLEARLY STATES "Safe for Hardwood Floors". If it doesn't SAY IT, then it doesn't MEAN it. If you have a link to the rug pad you want to use, please load it. We can have a look at the link to check for the wording "Safe for Hardwood Floors". If in doubt, visit www.rugpadusa.com They may be expensive but they are worth every penny when it comes to hardwood floor protection. Personally, I would not wish to use an indoor-outdoor rug over hardwood, but it is a personal choice and it has already been purchased. You now need to remedy the situation by finding the appropriate rug pad to protect the hardwood from the area rug. Suggestion: "Safe For Hardwood Floors" is the bare minimum you can use....See MoreAre Polypropylene rugs safe to use on LVP flooring without a pad?
Comments (4)You need a statement from the PPE (polypropylene pad) manufacturer that CLEARLY STATES (ahem...it is bold writing on the tag at the store...or on line in big bold letters over the pic) "Safe for Use with Vinyl Floors". If you don't see it, then you don't have the guarantee. Each manufacturer makes their PPE in a different way. A rigid PPE product (like a plastic plate) is NOT reactive to vinyl....because it does not have 'softeners' called plasticizers. The SOFTER the PPE the more likely it has plasticizers in it. The word 'plastic' is being used in the scientific/medical sense. Not the 'every day' use like we think it does. The word 'plastic' means 'malleable or bendable. The human brain is incredibly 'plastic' or has great 'plasticity' up to the age of 25 years. That's what 'plasticizer' means in this instance. You won't know if the manufacturer uses plasticizers until you get onto their warranty page or installation/use page. On those pages, somewhere - in fine print most likely - it will state where and when the product can be used. If 'vinyl' is NOT MENTIONED in any document then it is NOT ALLOWED. The building industry has discovered the concept of 'restrictive use' as the best way to go about writing documents. It is EASIER to write about what something CAN be used with (it is a definitive and EXAUSTIVE list) rather than listing everything it CANNOT be used for. That means, if it ain't listed as a regular use item, it ain't allowed. Simple as that. Get a written statement from the PPE company stating they will hold themselves 100% liable for any damage their product causes with your floors. If they don't, and they won't, then don't use the product with vinyl....See MoreBunny
