Need Advice for Lighting kitchen island
Comments (1)Ok old house snob alert....understand it before I finish posting... 1928 house and your architecht is recomending cans? Bleh bleh bleh bleh!!! Ya, cans are great, I love them, have them all over my 1980's townhouse, but in a period home....well bleh My kitchen (in the 80's townhouse) has an island, which is not in the middle of the room, and is not centered on the range, nor the fridge, nor the nook with the table....it's centered in the space it occupies :) And centered on that is my 1913 light fixture :) It is not centered on teh range, sink or fridge, or any of the other (I have 3) 1913 light fixtures). I would personally fire any architecht that recommended cans in a 1928 home...but aside from that problem I have with them, I would not worry about centering the light fixture's on anythiing but the feature they're being used to highlight, ie the island. My stove is the feature item in my kitchen, and the island and lighting is not a detracting factor, despite the lack of centering. I doubt yours would be either. One of the things they taught in design school...too much symetry can be too much. You get to a point where it looks like the whole package came out of a kit, especially in a period structure. Example...even the sink is off center:...See MoreIsland power question and lighting advice needed

The worst case scenario would see you cutting a small channel into the existing floor - not the end of the world. As far as lighting goes...I don't think that there is such a thing as too many lights as long as they are on separate circuits. In our plan for the 15 x 15 foot food preparation area of our own space we have a total of 17 pot lights, one large chandelier type fixture over the island, undercabinet lighting and lighting inside the glass-fronts. These are on 8 circuits, and 6 of those are on dimmers. It would be very frustrating to finish a nice reno and find that you neglected to put enough light in the important places, or that you couldn't adjust the lighting to get the right ambience for entertaining. Glancing at your layout I would think you'd need at least three task lights over the cooktop run, two task lights over the sink run and at least three, if not five, over the island. It would be nice if these were on three separate switches with dimmers. I'd be tempted to add a nice attention getting fixture over the island, on its own dimmer. Then I'd put two rows of three evenly-spaced general lighting pots for ambient room lighting, wired independently again. Good Luck ! :)...See MoreI need advice for light over my kitchen island
Comments (7)Your current set up looks nice; however, your island would look more balanced if you spaced out the lights a bit. Comments (11)Good stuff from Beverly above. If you're a visual person (like me) you can also try the balloon trick. Blow up some balloons to be the same size as the lights (as close as possible.) Or you could mock something up with cardboard which would work well since your lights are rectangular (and very cool by the way.) Then hang your mockups on strings from the ceiling. You can play with positioning and length of string to see what you think. Stand by them to check your sight lines when working at the counter, and check them from further away to see how they look. I did this when I replaced a light in my kitchen with a light that has 3 separate globes that can be hung at different heights. I moved my table under the mocked up "light", sat the kids down for dinner, and fiddled around with the strings until I was happy with the heights of the balloons compared to the table. Then I kept the mockup hung nearby for the electrician to follow as a guide....See MoreDavid
