Anybody Live in a "Knockdown"?

I read an article today about the demand for land in certain areas being so high that older homes are being bought, razed and new homes constructed in their place. In one example, two dozens homes were bought "for about $450,000 each". Obviously this is not your typical urban renewal project.

We live in a suburban subdivision platted in the 1960s, 2-3 acre lots surrounding a lake. Our home is lakefront, built in the late 1960s and remodeled a few times since. The last major remodel was in 2005. So far there have been no knockdowns but the last few lakefront lots had homes built on them that go for 3 - 8 times the value I've placed on our home. We're looking to do some more updating but I'm thinking we live in a knockdown.

So, if you do live in a "knockdown" isn't there a point where any value added to the home might not be recouped because the bigger value is in the land? Would that impact your thinking on remodeling?
