Hard white spots on Phal leaves.
Comments (1)Do they look like crusty deposits on the leaves, but not actually part of the leaves? If its the mineral deposits from your water, then I would think that it will be visible on all orchids, not just your two phals. They could be sun/heat damage that caused the leaves to "pop". Try to post a picture so that we would have a better idea of what is going on....See MoreNew phal leaves lead to wilt & rot of old leaves?
Comments (3)1. Don't fertilize til you're confident that they're healthy again. Fertilizing a plant when there's a problem just compounds the stress on it. 2. if a rot is fast, it's bacterial. Fungal rots are slower. 3. Mush is always bad, and can spread. You should always cut mush off by cutting into the healthy tissue nearby. If a whole leaf is mushy, take off the whole leaf. Dust the stem of the plant where the leaf was attached with cinnamon. 4. I always cut off yellow leaves, if for no other reason than that way I can tell if it's new yellow or the same old yesterday yellow. 5. Cinnamon is a good contact anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, (and dessicant) so it's beneficial to dust a cut or problem spot with it. 6. Your assertion in the title suggesting the new leaf somehow caused this is dead wrong. Getting a new leaf is not what caused this. Rots can move amazingly fast, and they can be started by sunburn, tho often sunburn just makes a dark or white spot on leaves. I've had all three from sunburn. I have no way of knowing whether sun is what caused this, but it's possible. Because rots can move so fast-- I've seen them destroy a plant in just a day or so. Because they move so fast, always act immediately when you see *any*-- even a speck. No way to be sure what caused this problem. There are always several causes that produce the same effects. Why diagnosis is difficult and time consuming. I would definitely repot. Phals respond positively to a repot with new growth for the next three months. Also, you get a good chance to find out what's going on with the roots. Be sure to repot into a pot only a little bigger than the roots. Use a light hand when repotting. If you are using bark as a medium, soak the plant pot and all in tepid water for about 20' before hand to soften the roots for less damage to them. This time of year, the angle of the sun changes, and places that didn't receive direct sun suddenly do. That can create burns on a plant. The only way of knowing if a place is too hot, is touching the leaves while the sun is on them-- if cool to barely warm, ok. If warm be cautious. If hot, they are definitely burning. Cool them quickly with cool water....See MoreBlack spots on phals
Comments (2)Hi, I'm new here, but I had the same problem and I use mancozeb and decis together and that did the trick, also moving them is a good idea, I also use cinnamon to stuff the spots, I use a strile knife and sort of create a little sink then I stuff with cinnamon its not too pretty after but it stops the spots from spreading eventually you will get new leaves, hope this helps....See MorePhal leaf spots
Comments (9)No problem, thanks for the advice. I have noticed after a few weeks without much rain they start to droop. One even shed some old leaves once when I let it go too long. They bounce right back after watering once or twice though. But I will keep a closer eye on it in the future. i cut the shells in half, and then soaked them in rainwater for maybe a week? I changed the water every day or two. Then I packed the shell with lfs, and mounted them up. For the first month or so I watered every day or two. After about a month they had roots growing into the moss, and around the shell, and even into the material of the outer shell. At this point they have such extensive roots they don't show any signs of drought for at least a week, maybe longer, of heat and dry. I've been very happy with this. They've even grown better than some I have mounted on a tree. the one hard part is watering without splashing the crown. I used a hose carelessly at first and lost a leaf to crown rot. Caught the rot right before it spread into the crown, and cut the leaf off. i took pictures of the spots close up. I'll attach those now. The circular spots in particular concer me....See MoreBill
