Replacing hardwood floors in older house (circa 1930's)

I just purchased a quaint 2 story home in my local town and after pulling up the carpet in the dining room, I discovered the hardwood floors underneath had been painted. My goal is to have a nice hardwood floor in the dining room for aesthetics as well as my two young children and their sometimes less than perfect eating habits. My first attempt will be to strip and refinish whats there, but if that doesn't work I may get adventurous and replace the floors. I have noticed the current floors are perpendicular to the joints with no subflooring. The planks lay right across the floor joists. Can this be reproduced with new planks if I go that route or do I need a subfloor? Thank you!
