inherited plants - need ID's please
Comments (4)All four plants will do best in a lightly shaded spot--definitely protected from direct sun from 10-3. Top is Bat Plant (Tacca integrifolia), likes it moist, snails like it. Next is a self-heading Philodendron. Moist to average soil, but too much sun will cause leaves to brown #3 is China Doll, a Radermachera species. Can be acclimated to full sun in an irrigated spot. last one is Stromanthese sanguinea 'Tricolor'. Again, too much sun or too dry of soil will cause leaves to brown. ALso will die back if exposed to cold winds or frosts....See MorePlease help ID these hostas
Comments (7)I also figured out they sold Komodo Dragon in 2007 but it's not listed in their 2010 catalog ==>>> is this the second time you said something like this ... [i think.. lol] naylor buys a certain number of young TC.. pots them up grows them to perfection for a year or two .... and sells them and when they are gone.. they are gone.. i dont understand what significance you are putting on the fact that it is in one years catalog.. and not the next.. all it means.. is that they sold them all.. or they all died ... their biz format is not to have every hosta forever.. they grow and sell the newest and the best.. and if its not new-ish.. it is gone ... and i talked to jack once.. as to why he was selling on the library auctions .... and he basically said.. it was odds and ends.. too few in number to put in the following years catalog .... and if i cant go into the catalog.. and being that they have very few visitors [they are not open to the public] .. any $$$ is better than nothing .... and it had nothing to do with what the actual hosta was.... its simply a function of making space.. for the next .. newest and latest .... my QOTS.. is much more vase shaped.. in deep shade ... my komodo dragon is about 5 feet tall and 8 feet wide ....... it has been dead to the ground for months.. i dont recall is leaf pattern .... your 3 hosta.. in the pic above.. are at least 3 feet too close together ... ken...See MoreHosta I.D. Comments (9)I've seen so many mis-labelled plants at grocery stores and mass merchants that I don't trust their labels anymore. Sometimes, customers switch the labels accidentally, I know...but I've seen tons of misidentified hostas for sale with adhesive labels stuck ON the pots. Yikes! Scary that hundreds of these go out that way from the growers, huh?! I made a Home Depot run to check theirs out - thanks to Mary4b for the suggestion. I found a number of plants marked as 'Great Expectations' (including quite a few that were actually 'Golden Tiara', and some that were actually 'Krossa Regal'...!) None had the crazy bloom stalk, most had only 1-2 eyes/pot, and all had more corrugation on the leaves. Very few had such streaking. The two GEs that I already have were/are v-e-r-y slow-growing, and took 4 years to become established. They still aren't full sized yet, and this is year #5! The other hostas in that bed go gangbusters - so it's not a deficiency in the soil or culture. All my hostas, (now 100+) except for 'Fire & Ice' and 'Spilt Milk' have thrived. My mystery hosta already had 5-6 eyes in the 1 gallon pot when I bought it, and has already increased quite a bit in size...YAY! Maybe it is a GE that had growth regulators applied to it. I wouldn't mind having one that would grow quickly - patience isn't one of my strengths! ;) Maybe it's some other fast-growing variety. Whatever it is, I LOVE IT so far....this should be a very interesting hosta season! Thanks again for all the input - - Lisa...See MoreHosta ID please help!
Comments (50)Thank you for the thoughts and comments folks. I am wondering if the colour is so different on my plant only due to the fact that it is grown in almost full sunlight? I also wonder if some of the crinkled, unruly nature of the leaves could be attributed to the fact that it is root bound (because of the surrounding grass) and kind-of "bursting at the seams". The actual area where the eyes sprout is quite small (maybe 18 inches across) and it seems very tightly packed (lack of room to move--maybe causing the leaves to crinkle more on their way out?). It does share certain qualities of the Titanic sport in Jagd51's picture....See Moredon_in_colorado
