Looks good to me - it has two eyes this year! Cut off the unusual scape if it bothers you, and watch it fill out over the season. :)

its early.. its probably been cold.. its lagging... why one.. who knows ...

and it bolted ... sent up a flower early ...

maybe it was stepped on.. before it emerged ...

the pips .. eyes.. should be seen all winter ... above ground..

the fact that yours are leafing below ground [the smaller one for sure] .. indicates its probably planted to deep.. or it sunk ... or you built up the mulch too high ...

i would dig it up ... cut off the flower.. and reset it at proper depth ... maybe leave it on the driveway for an hour or two .. to teach it a lesson ...

Hi, I'm a little new to gardening, and to this forum.. One of my hostas has holes in its leaf like the one above. Is this a bug and can I do anything about it?

Ken, You are right about several things. It got stepped on several times by my 70 Lbs dog as it is close to her pathway and on the edge of the bed. Also it may be planted too deep as last fall when the landscaper was edging the bed, too much dirt was left there. It was then mulched over this spring. I will dig it out and replant (the drive way lesson is something to think about....)

The holes on the leaves, they could have been from Slugs (although it is early for slugs). Or frost damage or the dog traffic when it was emerging.

seren.. note how the holes are mirror image from the leaf center ... that means something like a .. carp.. just blanked.. ??? worm ... just keep typing.. lol ... ate thru it.. while it was stilled furled ... and by now.. its long gone.. CUT WORM ... lol ...

Kay, I did a search and found this post from 2012. The flower on the empress wu hosta is exactly the same as my QOTS. So I guess I should cut off the flower to channel the energy to root growth?

fasciated scape? (sp?) that was my thought too, just saw one in a pot at lowe's the other day too, must be pretty common like was said in a previous thread. Ultimately the previous thread said that it will most likely come up just fine next year

I've got a couple this year too. Pretty things! It's just another way for hostas to show you just what fun things they can do, LOL.

Lol - I really don't know anything! I just remembering seeing it several times on Gardenweb and thought it was interesting. I think when you cut it is your choice; maybe consider how much of the plant is fascinating so you can decide if it needs that section for chlorophyll?? ... Needs a way to gather that energy to send to the roots?? (I could be totally making that up in my own head!)

Like Ken said, if it's planted too deep you'll need to raise it up. Otherwise, they usually don't repeat that in following years. I think they're cool looking, too! But I prefer the leafy foliage in the proper place. :)

a world class wholesaler suggested.... the energy is long spent.. by the time this happens .....

so cutting it off wont do much.. so why not watch it ... unless you already stormed out there with the machete ...
