What is wrong with my Snow Queen?

Hey all

I have 2 different vines of Snow Queen, one is forming elongated normal looking buds that will probably open in the next day or two.

The other is forming THESE on the WHOLE PLANT!!!! What the heck is wrong? THe only thing it was "fed" this year is some RoseTone and alfalfa pellets because it is planted near a rose and the ferts have probably leached into the soil. Of course, the other one was fed the same mixture because there is a rose on either side of the arbor.

Thanks for any help you can offer. THis has been a rough year for me with clemmies. I just lost a gorgeous 4 year old Ramona to wilt :-(

Your Ramona is most likely NOT dead. Don't dig it up, just cut it back hard and fertilize it.

Has the Snow Queen been exposed to pesticides or herbicides?

I'd cut the abnormal buds off.

I will cut Ramona back. I hadn't done anything to it yet, I kept hoping it would perk up :-(

No, Snow Queen hasn't been exposed to any chemicals that I know of... I don't do pesticides (except sluggo) and I haven't used any herbicides in that part of the garden. The foliage is a little odd looking too - sort of crinkly. Could this be from the unusually cold weather we had in April? I would have though that both plants would have been affected though.....

When you plant the Asao in the ground go ahead and plant it deep. You should bury the crown and several inches of the stems. This won't hurt it, it is what you should do. Clematis are hardy to zone 5, many to zone 3 so no reason to cover them though they are less hardy in a pot than the ground. "wilting" is common on young plants. Can be because they grew too much top growth without enough roots to support, fungus or because voles chewed them or husband's weed whack them. They usually grow out of it. Clematis aren't really delicate, they are just slow to establish and many that are sold are too small to put in the ground but people don't know this and they die and they think Clems are delicate.

It is cercospora and very common on oakleafs, especially when grouped tightly together like at the nursery. Not harmful, just unattractive. Good air circulation and an occassional spray of Immunnox minimizes the condition. Bayer also makes a systemic product. New leaves will come out clean so prevention is key. If there aren't too many, I pick off the spotted leaves. If the whole plant is covered, might as well wait until next season and try to head it off at the pass. I have one SnowQueen that has almost flawless leaves, an Alice with about 1/8 of the leaves spotted, and three species quercifolia, one in great shape and the other two that came from the nursery this year that are covered with it. The longer the leaves are on the plant, the further it progresses. By Fall when the leaves turn, it will just blend in / be part of the normal color change. If the plant looks otherwise healthy, don't let the spots deter you from buying it. SnowQueen (my favorite) will make an elegant shrub and I think you will not regret buying it......yg

So....I finally get to a big piece of info that I didn't know about. Apparently ALL our plants are on the same drip line. The landscape guy only put in one line back there when he did the wall. UGH! I had no idea about this. So, this means I can't do anything right? If I bump up the water on my palms/tropicals, I drown my roses, right? If I water the palms seperately say with a bucket or something, how much and how often? I didn't go down a full foot, but I was able to try and go down a few inches and it's pretty dry, yeah. About the Philo, yeah, all the tropicals minus the palms went in March/April-ish. The philo was really doing good and now it's just become so hot. I am trying so hard to find out what to do. I am upset w/the nursery we purchased all our stuff from because they're not calling back at all to help w/advice. The bird of paradise and our canna are doing amazing. Everythign else I am trying so hard to figure out what to do so I can save them. This heat sure is not helping me either. --Terra

Hi Chris, I work for an arborist and see this with palms frequently here in Los Angeles. From your pictures, I see yellowing in the leaves especially along and spreading from veins, however, the overall look of the plant is ok, trunk appears intact. It is probably a condition called "iron chlorosis" this happens when the soil or water applied is highly alkaline = high ph. This high ph reduces the plants ability to take up nutrients- iron. Have your soil ph tested if too high try adding a ph reducer to your soil. The iron is usually there, the palms just can't uptake the nurtients due to the alkalinity. I've heard adding white vingar to the watering helps but can't give you the info on the amount to use or frequency. Hope this helps. :) Firegurl Danielle

Sometimes weird weather can make clematis produce unusual buds and sepals with unusual colors. Cold weather can make clematis sepals have unusual green coloration. Hot weather can severely distort flowers. Following are examples of hot weather distortion on blooms:

If you have been having the weird weather temperature swings we have been having in NC, then I won't worry about it and chalk it up to the weather. I personally don't think the buds need to be removed as I have seen really weird things happen to clematis flowers that are nothing but weather related incidents.

I think our warm then cold & snowy Spring did a number on my Wada's Primrose too.
It is an older plant and usually blooms right after my a old macropetals. Last year the flowers did not look as good as in previous years.
I fed & manured the surface this Spring and it started growing well. Soon buds were forming.
For about a week now there have been numerous flowers opening, but they are only the size of the tip of my pinky.
I was thinking that maybe they would get larger from this inauspicious opening, but so far they haven't. Maybe the cold & 4 days of off & on rain has done this to them. There are some unopened buds that I will be watching to see if they grow and become normal flowers now that we have a little sun, but not a lot of warmth.
Bluebird & Markham's Pink have been waiting for this sun, and I expect I will see some open flowers when I go outside.

Even though the two are near each other, they might be in different microclimates.

Also, Weed N'Feed products contain a herbicide that is notorious for drifting on the slightest bit of wind.

At any rate, I'd cut off the damaged portions and fertilize unless you did it recently.

What is wilted on Ramona won't perk up. Cut it all off.
