Sad news kitchen-wise. Can't use green sink in remodel
Comments (16)The green sink is 42 inches wide. I was thinking of a 30" base with a maybe 20" (or so) wide single bowl undermount or apron sink, so there'd be a difference of about 22 inches of counter top. The open space at the end is where I was thinking of putting a raised 18" DW with a storage drawer below it. I figure at least a 2" fill on the wall side to accommodate the door trim. The window (TBA) will be somewhere in between 4 and 5 feet wide. Also considering a single deep tub DW drawer instead of the 18", fwiw. (The program DH uses for the floor plan is at least 10 years old. Pretty limited but it works for the main floor plan measurements. Putting in specific items (like a raised DW)is nearly impossible.) It seems like no matter what kitchen I've ever had, I tend to work in the same 3 feet to the left of the sink so that's what I'm trying to get. Right now in that kitchen, there is 30" to the left of the present sink and then 30" around the corner before the stove. We've been using the kitchen while remodeling the bedroom/entry side of the house this winter and I find it a bit short on space at the present measurements so I've been trying to eek out all the counter top inches that I can. Here is a pic of the kitchen as it is currently except all that 'decorative' stuff belonged to the renter and is gone. It's not the greatest pic but you can see how the general layout is. The current window over the sink is like 3' wide. The SB is currently 33" wide. I want to widen the window (just leaving 33" for 12" deep open shelves on the stove wall and then an 18" upper between the open shelves and the left of the sink and trim)and move the sink a bit to the right as this will greatly improve my view of the river. Right now I have a great view of the backyard and front of the garage and I have to lean over to the right side of the current window to see the pretty river. The counter top issue was one of the main factors in deciding months ago that the green sink wouldn't work and I guess I forgot that for a moment after Boxer posted that green sink pic. After taking some time off from obsessing on this (ok, like a day), a thought occurred: Work the layout to perfection (or as close as GW peeps can get me, lol) and then see how it 'feels' in the house as a whole as we start to finish in the other side of the house. I know just opening up the 7 ft. dropped ceilings to 9 ft. and getting new windows in the side we're working on has caused me already to rethink some things that I thought were pretty much set. Wonder if I'm getting ahead of myself and then I feel bad that I'm wasting yours and everyone else's time since I change my mind so much. Hate to become that kid that cried "Wolf" and burn out my best resource for ideas... you all! Unless, do people get insane like this during this stuff or is it just me?...See MoreOur small budget kitchen is... done (mostly)!
Comments (25)Thanks again everyone. I appreciate it so much! desertsteph: Sorry I missed your comment before! The Energizer ones are from Target although they aren't showing up on their website hmm As far as the light bar, that one works really well. The position is good and it gives plenty of light. The light bar in the center works less well because we are standing in our shadow at the stove and adjacent counter. So we need to fix that light / add lights. dianalo: I feel that way too. It's funny that even with the overall darker colors, it seems more spacious when I stand inside. I wonder why that is. lazydaisynot: Thank you so much! If I had it my way, honestly, the kitchen probably would've been white - it always looks so clean and bright! I think the current trend is towards a more modern, cleaner look which may be why these colors aren't used except for accents. Sometimes I look at my pictures and think that it could pass for the "before" pictures for some members LOL. I took no offense by your post, I just thought I'd clarify my wording. :) pamike1: Thanks! I was actually very hesitant about a 6inch backsplash, but it turned out ok! I do love the addition of the lazy susan lights because it's so much easier to see everything. I didn't know that about the colors that must be why I'm so hungry lately! ;P...See MoreOur Thanksgiving week total kitchen remodel
Comments (124)Okay, we're back on track! We had a good workday on Saturday, and knocked off a few lingering projects. First, we put in the desk area stuff. We took your earlier advice and pulled the upper cabinet away from the back wall by 6", but that added a lot of complexity in fastening it, as it had to be screwed to the side walls. We had to build up about 1.5" on either side, so we did it with plywood and some shaved-down pieces of a pallet. It looked like this: We got the wall cabinet screwed in, and the desk placed (at counter height), but not fastened yet, because I can't remember how far from the back wall I told the granite guy to go with the counter. So we'll wait to do the final front-to-back positioning until he brings the slabs back. I still need to add the fillers and the crown to the wall cabinet, but I'm using the filler around the tambour, and need to use it there first, and use the remnants on the desk. DH worked for 4 hours on the island electrical. We mused, discussed, and brainstormed to figure out what to do on this. We've got decorative panels everywhere, so an outlet in the middle would detract from that. Plug mold (our original idea) would have required one side of the island counter to be a couple inches more overhand, plus it would cover up the top of the decorative doors. So our KD (thanks, Dan!) had this idea: It's unobtrusive and simple in concept, but to execute my DH not only had to drill the holes in the precise place in the 3/8" plywood skin, but then chisel out a rectangular area behind it, so the outlet could be flush with the outside of the plywood. Whew! We've got one on either side of the center panel, and the entire island is shown here in the finished shot. I also did the penninsula trim: more plywood, decorative door panels, and corner bead. We're waiting by the phone with bated breath for our granite guy to call saying they're ready to bring it. They did send us photos of the template, so we know they've got our slabs. Here's one (sorry, don't know how to make it bigger). And our backordered drawer handles should finally be here on Monday....See MoreBig Family Kitchen - Help us refine our dreams!
Comments (14)Speaking to my own personal situation, now that my kids are older, they are often preparing their own meals (breakfast/lunch) when I'm in the kitchen. We have filtered water in the fridge door as well as at the sink. In the late afternoons, I might be prepping dinner and someone needs to fill a thermos of water for sports practice. Can't use the fridge for that, but then I'm in the way prepping dinner by the sink when they need to get to the sink water dispenser. Or, I'm making dinner and someone is helping. I'm a clean up as you go type, so if I'm trying to clean a bowl I just used while my daughter is trying to rinse vegetables for the salad she's making for dinner....congestion again at the sink. Or I'm in the middle of cleaning up from making morning meals while one of the kids is trying to get to the sink to dump the little bit of milk/cereal down the disposal b/f putting the bowl in the dishwasher. Just little things like that. Also, dh and I sometimes cook together - having two sinks would be a huge help there. He might be trying to cut open a package of meat to grill and I'm trying to rinse vegetables for the side dish, or dump a hot pot of water, etc. With a big family, as they get older, their presence in the kitchen is much more noticeable rather than when they were younger and I made/prepped everything myself. Honestly, having one sink was never an issue until I had four pre-teen/teens. So you may not see a need for it now, but with four kids and plans for more, I couldn't imagine having only one sink if I were planning a new kitchen and had a choice....See Moreweedmeister
