I don't know the home remedy, sorry. But I find that Terro works wonders.

Be careful if you use boric acid if you have pets - it's toxic to them.

No, don't use boric acid. You want to use 20 Mule Team Borax (it's in the laundry aisle by the washing soda). Recipe depends if you have sweet eating ants or grease eating ants.

If you have sweet eating ants, mix sugar with the borax (I think I use 1/2 cup sugar to 2 tablespoons of borax dissolved in 1 cup warm water). That's all Terro is, if you read the label. It should be pretty syrupy.

If you have grease eating ants, mix the borax with peanut butter. Do keep it out of the reach of your pets - I've never found anything definitive saying borax is poisonous to pets, but my mutts adore peanut butter hence the bait isn't available to the ants!

It doesn't kill them right away, but they will take it back to the nest. That's a good thing. You should see a steady population decline.

Another approach... grab a flashlight(they're hard to see) and shine it at a low angle to the surface. You'll probably see them trailing, some going one direction, others going the other direction. Follow their trail. The first time I did that I followed the trail to a tiny hole in the corner of a window. Use chalking, paint, whatever to seal the hole. If/when they find another way in, repeat.

I still use Terro, etc. but sealing them out seems to work longer term, at least in my case.

I buy Terro at the supermarket, drip a few drops on the cardboard strips that come with it and place it somewhere on the path of the ants. They'll be gone the next day.

We had so many 'ghost ants' in our condo this winter that I saw them marching from room to room in the hallway, troops of them going along the angles where the walls meet the ceilings. I'd never thought to look UP for them. Bug Man sprayed two weeks apart, and we used the Terro traps. It took two months before they disappeared -- to return another day, I'm sure.

Boric acid is the active ingredient in Terro, Roach-Pruf, and other insect baits. I like the Terro pre-filled boric acid trays, myself. No fuss or muss. Great stuff.

Yeah baking soda and sugar will work, add water and heat it in a sauce pan until it makes a syrup. You can also use dish washing soap and water in a spray bottle to kill the little buggers on contact, they suffocate in the soapy water.
