Comments (4)They are not fast sprouters ladies. No way. You thihnk you've got a bad flat but wait a month and you see seedlings. If you have to end your care of no-shows (and who doesn't) just flip-flop that soil onto a bed and pat it into the soil surface. You have to fist flip the flat onto an old cookie sheet and then flip it again so it lays in the bed top-side up. Then just pat it in or simply use your foot and press. It can be quite surprise what will show up this year...or sometimes even in the next year....See MoreSo the weather outside is frightful..
Comments (21)We had 18 here Tuesday morning and 21 Wednesday morning. On Tuesday we didn't break freezing until after noon, and then dropped back down below freezing about 5 p.m. It didn't break freezing until after 9 a.m. on Wednesday. So we had about 16 hours below freezing on both nights. Brr! I wonder how poor Kayjones made out with all of her tropical and near-tropical plants. She's on the beach so she was a few degrees warmer than me, but that is still scary cold for someone with her plant collection. I covered most of my winter veggies, but I left the collards, kale, carrots, parsnips and herbs uncovered. The peas lost a lot of foliage but I believe the plants will pull through. The chard was also damaged, but will recover. Everything else took little or no damage. I took most of my potted citrus into the garage, but I took one of my Red Lime plants to the south side of the house, and left it near the wall with no further protection. It came through! It may lose some of its leaves, but I don't think it will lose any stems at all. I am really excited about that; it looks like the Red Lime is hardy! Or that spot is a really warm microclimate. Either way, I will transplant one of the Red Limes over there in the spring. But I will maintain a few more of them in pots in case something happens. Also, none of them has fruited yet, so I don't know whether they came true from seed. I want to keep the others in case I need to do a dig and replace operation later....See Morehelp! sugar ants invading the kitchen ...!!
Comments (9)Boxerpups, you're not mean. You're pragmatic. The rule I have is that I generally don't mess with the bugs outside. If they come inside, then they need to DIE. I have an occasional problem with ants in the cat food bowls. When that happens, I do a few things: 1. Get a bit more vigilant about cleaning up the little bits of food they scatter about their placemats. 2. Kill any of the little buggers I find. 3. Spray the floor with a dilute solution of plain dish soap and then wipe it with a paper towel. Also wipe along any route they are taking into the kitchen area. Item 3 is important because they leave a trail. Also, I have to use something non-toxic on surfaces where the cats walk. It takes some time, but the ants eventually go somewhere else....See MoreLittle teeny tiny ants!
Comments (14)We had those once, they are almost impossible to see. They tracked peanut butter and crisco from my cupboard down the wall, behind the fridge, and into the baseboard (and from there I assume through the wall and outside). It was a line of grease! We used diatomacious earth because it is safe to use around the animals (ground up fossil dust). We would pile it where they were coming up. They would come up in a different spot, so we would put it there. It took about a week, but finally they were gone. Of course, I also put EVERYTHING in that cupboard in sealed plastic. They could get into regular jar lids and such. My DH was eating peanut butter on toast and was made at me because he said I left crumbs in the jar. What?!?! I opened the jar, and it was full of those darn ants! Blech blech blech! Dances....See MoreDoctorant
