I'd like to save this plant

I have a beginner question please; I’d like to save this
damaged plant. This plant has been in the same pot at least
10 years. It lives in the corner of my office, with a west facing window about
10 feet from the plant. It’s never been repotted as far as I
know. I’ve been worried that it’s
getting top heavy, and sure enough last week I found it turned over on the
floor, it fell about 5 feet. Now, some of
the leaves are damaged, as you can see in the photo. Even before the fall, it wasn’t a very
pretty plant for quite a while, sort of straggly. There isn’t much soil in the pot now because
the roots are so large (and some of soil spilled when it hit the floor). I’d like to repot it and give it a fresh
start. I “think” I’d like to divide the
plant into two pieces, repotting one half in the same size pot and maybe taking
the other half home to grow. I’ve been reading
about repotting on this forum, but I’m still not sure what to do. Would
separating the plant be a good idea? If
I cut the long and damaged leaves off, would that promote new leaves to
form? Any advice is appreciated. (I couldn't get the pictures to load in the correct order)
