Comments (3)Did you experience a late spring freeze, like I had? I had a huge Sum and Sub that now is smaller than my August Moon, because of that. It came back, but is waaay smaller than it's ever been, even when a new plant! Phil...See MoreWeird Tip Growth
Comments (5)I think it's "sealed over". Some varieties are more likely to do this than others, like Daisy Wilcox. Your trunk looks great, so unless the tip or base under the soil gets mushy, I think you're safe. The terminal growth tip stops growing for some reason so the growth takes over at the leaf nodes. Yours has a lot more growing than I've see before--the one on the trunk is especially unusual. Chances are, like Andrew's, only a few strong ones will continue into true branches. Here's a picture of J105 from this spring, doing the same thing: This tip made about another six or seven little growths like yours, and I let it grow a couple of months to see which new branches would make it, then cut off the ones that were weaker or badly placed on the tip. I ended up with four good new branches that grew like crazy over the summer and are now between four and nine inches long. You can't even see the original tip area any more....See Moreweird growth. Midge, RRD, or what?
Comments (14)Update** Last year I ended up using a tree and shrub drench. The midge had got pretty bad. Hopefully I got them all. I didn't want to use insecticide, but it was that, or no roses. I did some research and found the ingredient that kills midge, then looked for it on Amazon. I don't have any houses near mine, so I'm assuming it can't come back if I got them all. I have seen one single weird bud this year, so I'm watching. Rose midge has to come from roses right? They aren't in trees/weeds?...See MoreMeyer Lemon weird growth?
Comments (20)The growth you pictured is from the rootstock which is below the graft. The graft is that large bumpy thing in your photos. I must admit I have never seen a graft that has swollen up as big as yours. That long shoot you originally inquired about should be removed unless you have a desire to graft other varieties onto it or you want to see what it does if left alone. I don't know anything about rootstock so I cannot help you there. Sorry....See MoreConnieMay ON Z6a
