weird growth on grape vine
Comments (5)That is the grape tumid gall. The insect that causes it is called, not surprisingly, the grape tumid gallmaker. The adult is a type of midge. The larval stage of the midge actually causes the gall. The galls usually form on leaves, but sometimes on stems, petioles and flower clusters. It's generally not a major problem although if the gall forms on a flower cluster you won't get any grapes from that cluster. There usually aren't enough around to be an issue. You can remove the gall if you don't like the way it looks. But since this is essentially an insect that lives on native grapes, it is questionable if removing it or leaving it will have any significant effect on the overall population....See MoreRRD? or What?
Comments (12)Michael, I used different pruners to remove the 7/30 growth and then bleached them because I was thinking possible RRD, appreciate the reminder. The red veined leaves have appeared on a couple more canes of the bush besides the original major cane and new shoots. Is this enough info to diagnose it RRD? I keep waiting to see witch's broom or the hyperthorniness and immediately I'll remove the entire plant or should I do it anyway?...See MoreIs this rrd or new growth?
Comments (31)What bothers me the most is that the bud with pink petals looks normal, and yet NONE of the supporting leaves have turned green, nor do they appear to be going to turn green. I saw something like this in the now-lost garden at LMU. A rose with stems and leaves magenta red-mid summer- and it never turned green and then the buds opened normal color. Things just aren't supposed to happen that way, and where did the chlorophyll go- or is it totally overwhelmed by excessive anthocyanin production. Same picture with buds: damn. those buds are lacking receptacles- no place for ovules so something is really messing with the reproductive parts of that rose. I have seen that before with RRD symptoms. Your backgrounds on those last shots are lovely, and that bed has great plant spacing. If that were mine, I couldn't live with it in that bed. Comments (6)I feel for you Katherine - I've got some weird new growth on one of my roses that's worrying me. Your new canes are big, but they're coming out of an even bigger cane. The foliage is dark, but the shape/size looks normal. The thorns seem odd, but I don't grow 'Eden' and have no idea what's normal for new canes on that rose. Hopefully someone who grows 'Eden' can tell us more!...See Morejim1961 / Central Pennsylvania / Zone 6
