Barred Owls Nesting Again!
Comments (4)I don't know how deep the nest actually is because I can't get up into that tree. From what I've been able to see, however, it appears that they are really exposed to the weather more than I ever expected them to like for nesting. There was once a very large limb that broke from this tree and eventually it developed into this large cavity. You can still see some of the limb at the top of the nest site. That area of the tree has really deteriorated over the last few years and I worry that it will soon be too open for the owls to continue to nest there. The tree is slowly dying and is losing limbs every year. Many sections of the tree have holes in it made by Pileated Woodpeckers. Squirrels and birds fly into one hole and out another hole in another section of the tree. Definitely hollow spaces in there. I've been contemplating making a nest box and mounting up that tree in that nest area for next year. I'm just not sure what to do. I've watched them nest there every year since 2003 and I would truly miss them. I want to offer a nest box but at the same time I don't want to spook them away from the site they have used for so long. Here is an image from 2003 when the young were leaving the nest and the tree is full of foliage....See MoreGrab bars again -- how do you decide where to put them?
Comments (2)Though you're not required to comply since this is your residence, ADA guidelines might help. For shower stalls, grab bars are installed running horizontally. 33" to 36" above the floor. The shower controls in ADA showers are located 38" to 48" above the floor and within 18" of the door opening....See MoreNewly painted black vanity with Anthropologie knobs
Comments (19)I did not sand the cabinets prior to painting. I had read on the kitchen forum, I think, where another GW member recommended Sherwin Williams Prep-Rite Pro Block Interior and Exterior. She said it must say "seals and bonds" on the label. I had the SW Prep-Rite tinted as dark as it could be tinted. I washed the cabinets down to make sure they were clean. Then I put a coat of the SW Prep-Rite on. Waited 24 hours, applied the first coat of black paint, waited 24 hours, applied the second coat of black. Waited 48 hours and rehung the doors. I waited another 24 hours before I attached the knobs. The SW Prep-Rite says you can paint after 4 hours, but in my reading, someone had had bad results when they only waited 4 hours, therefore, I waited 24 hours between coats. The only "issue" I had was when I took the Frog Tape off. One spot about 1/2" by 1", on the front of the vanity against the wall, peeled off. I lightly sanded and touched it up with only one coat of paint, which was sufficient. About Frog Tape, I wish I had read more before I started painting. It is advertised to have some property that causes the tape to seal to the wall when the paint is applied. It is supposed to maintain a sharp line. It did not. However, I've since read that wiping over the tape with a damp sponge prior to painting will activate the "Paint Block Technology."...See MoreAnthropologie furniture?
Comments (24)Honestly, sometimes when you lust after something pricey, and you find a cheaper alternate, you realize why. The sizzle on the Anthro. piece comes from the wonderful color (whatever it is) and sheen, and the gold base, and elegant proportions. The Bassett piece is a really good find as a replica, but has none of the sex appeal to me. The colors, for one; not even sure what the finish is on the bottom. The top heaviness. And even the door style ... the appeal is that is should be sleek, not traditional. Such a bummer, but beauty has its price. BTW, I can be more specific about my Anthro pieces if that helps. There were no defects. they were as pictured, I like them very much. The drawers are kind of clunky and do not open smoothly. To me, drawer function is where you can really differentiate furniture quality. I will say, it was about what I expected; I would never think of them for quality furniture, I think of them for trendy, fun pieces. I have them in MBR at the beachhouse. anthro nightstands...See MoreOaktown
