I'm growing the scarlet clematis and also the purple clematis and the grey purple clematis natives. The scarlet is well behaved, the purple gives me a few seedlings but the grey purple clematis is a whole other story! I get those popping up everywhere!

Thanks - I'm assuming scarlet clematis is c. Texensis and purple clematis is c. pitcheri, but draw a blank on the grey purple. Is that one c. drumondii or possibly c. crispa? No knowledge of these two natives. Had to look them up here: A Texan's Guide to Clematis.

I have Clematis texensis hybrids "Gravetye Beauty" and Duchess of Albany. Both of these vines are very healthy and generous with their blooms. I am hoping to find Sir Trevor Laurence. Of course, these vines are growing in well-amended garden soils and are watered generously, so I can't say they are as though as non-hybridized native clematis, but they sure are very good garden plants that require very little fuss.

Molly, Appreciate the inputs on 'Gravetye Beauty' and 'Dutchess of Albany'. Should do okay if they can handle our fertile clay, so will probably be looking for both. Had been propagating the Jackmanii, which we've confirmed does very well here on little care, to cover about 30ft of 6ft tall lattice. However, am becoming pretty convinced it would be nicer to mix it up with some of these diverse hybrids and natives that are likely to do as well.

I grow several clematis but most are not texensis.

Pink Fantasy – not a favorite

Clematis – Rebecca does really well for me once established

Clematis – Clematis viticella Venosa Violacea - not established yet

Clematis – Dutchess of Albany, Princess Diana - bought these in 2013 and Princess Diana does good, but Dutchess of Albany must hate the spot it's in. It doesn't grow very much and has never bloomed. I need to move it.

Clematis – Henryii - bought this last year. Left outside in a pot overwinter. It's already bloomed big white flowers.

I do have two clematis viticella: Sunny Skies and Etoile Violette and I am very, very pleased with them. I also have Jackmanni, which is a vigorous, healthy Clematis which I like. I have many of the large--flowered clematis hybrids that are beautiful, but are not as vigorous and their blooms, with their large, thin, petals, do not like our hot, summer Texas sun.

Betty Corning is a gray blue and one of my faves, the other is Helios, it would bloom all summer for me. They are not Texensis but wonderful

Thanks for the ideas; have seen some Clematis suffer in our heat and nice to know of a few more that can handle it. It was a big help in deciding how to space the c. Jackmanii divisions on the lattice now. I am going to leave room to fit some of these others in between as I start tracking them down later.

Just had to chime in again on my clematis collection. Today, I found (and purchased) a Madame Julie Correvon viticella clematis at Lowes. I am truly happy to add to the varieties that I have, especially since the deer don't bother clematis!
