Ferdinand update.

We branded the last big batch of calves at DBIL and SIL's yesterday afternoon, and I was looking for my little orphan. We had 128 head to do, so I didn't spot him until after we had them all gathered and separated at the corrals.

128 bawling calves and same amount of bawling cows, creates quite a din, and I thought I would never find him, let alone he be able to hear me call him, but I gave a try. It took a few minutes, but I spotted him (his eartag number is 228), and called out to him several times. DH kept shaking his head, like one little orphaned calf was going to hear me and come running. My dear niece, however, had faith that he would remember me, and told her uncle to back off and let's see.

Finally, after calling at the top of my lungs, his head shot up and turned to look at where we were standing. He came trotting over, but stopped about 3 feet away from us. He gave me a look like he knew who I was. I squatted down and called again, and he gave one step forward, changed his mind, and bolted back into the middle of the pen. I guess he figures his new mom is way nicer! (my dear niece gave her uncle stuck her tongue out at him, and gave him a SEE! look. He just shook his head)

Ferdinand is healthy, gained weight and growing! We are shipping them out to community pasture for the summer tomorrow, so I won't see him again until we gather and wean in October. But my little guy is doing just fine!
