Pineapple guava aka feijoa
Comments (7)I have a seedling that I consider very good, so good that when it had to move I tried my best to save it for another location. So far, so good. It's very late and has fruit pulp which is more transparent than many and does not brown when cut open. So don't discount seedlings. The fruit may not be as large as some of the named cultivars, but size is not everything :-) You can train a feijoa to be a tree or keep as a multi-trunk "shrub". Your choice, although some seem to have their own idea of how to grow. As for pollination, many are at least partly self-fruitful but pollen is not very mobile so the wind is not much help and bees are not much interested in the flowers, although I have seen them visit them when a small tree was parked next to a field of wild flowers in bloom. For years my seedling bloomed but never gave me fruit. Then I found the video linked below. It made me laugh, but I tried it and voila! Now I do the pollinating every year, just to be sure. Comments (56)Martin, it looks like you are inland a bit, this plant does not fruit well in a hot climate. In many U.S. locations, it is intended as a flowering shrub only. Try Murky's advice or try to determine if there are fruiting plants near you, this will tell you if it is possible to get fruit in your area. Adequate water during and the weeks after bloom can be critical....See MoreHelp! My Pineapple Guava is dying.
Comments (2)Feijoa is a lot less fussy than the more tropical guavas. Once established, the shrub (or tree if shaped) is drought-resistant and will do less well if over-watered. Here in S. and C. Calif. we don't fertilize pineapple guavas very often. As with figs, too much nitrogren will give you lots of leaves and less fruit. You should be tipping branches to force laterals; the fruit appears on new growth. Remember, the flower petals are delicious and sweet. You can carefully remove them to eat and still expect fruit to develop if you don't disturb the rest of the flower....See MorePineapple Guava Fruited in Central/South Florida?
Comments (7)Hi fagopher, I'm beginning to think the weather may something to do with it. I've heard a lot more success stories from people that have cooler weather in winter/spring. Although I have two(for cross pollination) my other one is a small bush and DID NOT flower last year, only my BIG one did. I read somewhere on one of the forums here(he was from Oregon)that posted he hand pollinates the flowers with a small paint brush and has great success. By the way I tried that, I bought a small inexpensive paintbrush sold in the stationery dept and tried hand pollinating it. Absolutely nothing happened, NOT one fruit! Mind you, I have never done this before so I had no idea if I did it correctly. I followed the directions as best as I could. I hope at least yours flowers this year, mine is behind from last year. Last year I had flowers by the end of May. So far I don't even see any buds. I will update IF I get any flowers later. Good Luck with your tree! Let us know if yours flowers......See Moreorganic_elizabeth_b
