A newbie last year - June Fever. So bright lime green!
Still unfurling...GE in all her glory!
A tie for first place...Northern Exposure. You seriously need this plant!
The other top dog of spring in my yard...Liberty! Miss you, Papou.
New last year and coming up great is Touch Of Class.
New last year, Paradise Island gets a beat down every time it rains hard as the gutter above her overflows and really does some damage.
June lookin good! Tucked in next to Liberty.
So happy Orange Marmalade came up well. This was my third try, bought a bigger plant last year, so maybe that's the trick.
New last year, Atlantis seems to be making an early leap!
Sweet little Dancing Queen, she is electric yellow and fabulous! New last year too.

Comments (16)The bad things about squash bugs: They're ugly and their young are like masses of spiders from a scary sci-fi movie. They stink if you squash them (beware even of using gloves -- the stink gets in the gloves. They are, after all, in the stink bug family.) They *can* destroy squash plants. The good things about squash bugs: Unlike imported cabbage worms, you won't end up accidentally eating them. If your plants are quite healthy, the bugs will just be ugly and stinky, but they won't rob you of squash. They can be killed by spraying with water with a little Palmolive dish soap (but the soap might be bad for your garden, I don't know -- I just discovered the deadliness of Palmolive by accident, and I don't know what else it might kill.) I cut out the piece of squash leaf (or do the whole leaf as rishtoshnm says) that has the eggs on it and put it into a big black trash bag. I do the same with all the plant residue in the fall -- Rodale institute calls this the "clean up trick" or some such -- you throw away all those eggs so they aren't there in the spring. So yes, burn those crop residues or send to the dump. Oh! and my favorite remedy, which has worked every year I've used it: plant garlic in each squash hill. Comments (14)I am just so excited by the "last years tiny seedling perennials" tranformed over winter to this spring's healthy young perennials! Many of these got planted out early last year and then got sort of "lost in the sause" of the many annuals in full bloom. But they clearly were growing! The biggest happy dance? HOS Lady's Mantle coming up in many spots. I plopped down in the bed yesterday and dug up the group and split it up along a walkway. Had 9 "teenagers" that look like they will be beautiful full grown adults this season. Comments (5)I had to direct sow last year after my zinnia seedlings failed and the daffs flopped. So I never did get it too look like what I had in mind. But this year is different. Jean, I know zinnias need lots of sun and the get lots of sun there all afternoon from about noon on. Comments (22)NEWBIE SEED PROJECT / UPDATE December 30, 2016 This year (as last), I started the Newbie seed offerings early in October. In December alone, I've had 24 requests and sent out most of those packages already. And I thought December would be a SLOW month!! I would GREATLY appreciate any seed donations if you have extra seeds you would like to donate to the newbies to help get them started. I need both vegetable/herb/edible seeds as well as flowers, but am currently out of enough veggie seeds to offer the newbies, and can only offer the flowers that I still have left. If you dont have any seeds, but would like to donate ziploc or paper seed packets ready to fill, address size labels for labeling seeds, bubble mailers or make a monetary donation, this would ALSO be GREATLY APPRECIATED. I have purchased seeds as well for newbies, to help round out some packages/add more variety on my dime. This is my way of 'paying it forward" and I spend alot of time prepping before packages can go out...Not that I am complaining. but an additional help would be GREAT!
