This weird thing happened last nite.

We were watching tv and all of a sudden an extremely loud whine, howl started The cats took off under the bed. It wasn't the smoke detector nor the carbon-monoxide, our first thought.

It was centered in the livingroom and I unplugged the tv, and anything else I could think of, and the noise wouldn't stop. Our hears were hurting and our heads were echoing with the sound, it was awful.

My laptop was on the floor, turned off. I picked it up just to eliminate any possibility and it was coming from that! I quickly took out the battery and the noise stopped. WTH!

It wasn't hot, overheated or anything. I'm so glad we were home, the sound would have driven my cats and neighbours crazy otherwise. I'm not sure what to do with it. I don't want to even put it in the laptop.

very puzzling never heard of anything like that happening. Since it was completely off I would not think it could possibly be the hard drive going bad. My best guess would be something strange with a speaker maybe but that would be really bizarre. I have heard of batteries making noise before they blow up so I would keep an eye on the battery but I can not imagine anything that loud. With the loudness factor it just seems like it has to be something audio related.
Prepare the tin foil hats just in case LOL!! It could be the aliens communicating with you!

Can you open the case and check inside? could something be stuck in the fan? Was the volume on?!?! (i.e., strange audio suddenly being played?)

PS: I'd say it wasn't overheated simply because you were there when the problem started and you immediately shut it off. -- OOPS -- re-read to see that it was 'off'. Now I see the problem. lol! Is there a bug in it? like a cicada or something that makes noise? :)

Carol - 2 systemic miticides are very efficient - and not as poisonous as Avid -it is Forbid and Pylon. Pylon is excellent for thrips as well - but it is very expensive and has a shelf life of 3 years. So -if you do not have them - do not waste your money. You can always buy it fresh as needed. I dragged my mites from AVSA in Raleigh. Why I think that Aniketa needs to restart the yucky plant - because no matter what she does - it will look horrible and distorted for a year- and if she restarts from a leaf - she will have new blooming plants in 6 months. My fruit trees are budding -- one of which still has leaves from last fall! -- and the forsythia are starting to bloom everywhere. The tulips are coming up now to join the other bulbs. My animals are shedding in earnest now, so they think spring is around the corner, too. If we're going to get nasty weather, I hope it's now before the pants take too much damage. And as much as I like the mild weather, so do many of the bugs that I'll spend the summer battling.

I to drove back to my old house in the old neighborhood. As I made the turn onto my street a drug dealer shouted ..Hay Man ... HAY I'v got what you want ... and held up his hand in a fist clutching a hand full of drugs. I ignored him and continued down the street to my old house. I spotted the old green carpeting rolled up and put on the curb for the trash man to take. I pulled in the drive, just over the side walk, to think about some nice old times, when the front door opened very slowly.... a young kid looked out and said, hay ... what you want....I said with smile and a pleasent voice, "I used to live here." The young man, pearing through the crack in the door said... SO WHAT....That's about what I was thinking right about now. I asked what happened to the house next door.. (the Phalens house) It was loaded with kids when I was young. I was an only child so I had lots of good friends next door.... "Oh that house" the boy replied... "well they had some bad peoples living there and the landloard tossed them out.... so the peoples that lived there trashed the house." Oh my what a mess that was, boared up windows and all. Who ever they were, they new how to trash a house. When I was growing up I always wanted the neighborhood to be nice, so I could come back and visit with old friends and neighbors, pet with the old dog next door and see the old lady who only gave us kids apples for Holloween. Oh well... that's life...........I'm glad I don't live there any more. Thanks for reading this....I feel a little better now.... (I think) Scott

I think a lot of possibilities have been brought up and I wouldn't know how you could narrow it down. I just hope it doesn't happen again. You mentioned watery diarrhea. My son is allergic to peanuts and his reactions have been gastrointestinal. I didn't know he was reacting at the time but in hindsight, after learning a few things about allergic reactions, I should have been tipped off because of the consistency of the vomit and diarrhea. It was very liquidy. At the time, I couldn't understand where it was all coming from since usually a child will only vomit what he has in his stomach but in an allergic reaction, your body keeps producing more of something (histamines???) and this is what was coming out of Nick. So based on the timing and the consistency of the diarrhea, I don't think you can rule out some type of allergic reaction.

jasdip, when you say it was off, do you mean it was in hibernate mode or that it was physically powered off? Friend suggests it could be the disk.

Sounds like failing bearings on a drive to me. It would be helpful to know if it was turned off or just hibernating.

It was completely shut down and the power bar turned off.

In researching this I have found that in some devices the video card can make that sound if the cord is not connected well or had come loose. It is some type of alarm. Some Bios also have an alarm.

I had a Dell netbook that would do that! It was terrifying. So loud! I finally threw the stupid thing way because it stressed me out so badly wondering when it would decide to go off again.

I don't know the answer, but I didn't learn until after my battery caught fire that it could. This was before they had alarms. Luckily, I was right there and saw the flames shooting out of the back.. If not, the whole house could have gone up. Maybe it's worth having it checked out. In general, if there's a LOUD alarm, it's that way to make you pay attention to it. It's telling you something important is happening and you should pay attention NOW. Those alarms are supposed to be for alerting you to heat issues. It doesn't have to be on to have a heat issue, and heat in the wrong place inside isn't necessarily felt outside, like it is when the machine is on and fans are venting heat.

NO I meant the connections to the actual video card in the laptop. If those connections are loose or coming not fully in contact it has an alarm that is very loud to let you know to check the connections. Things are so crammed into a laptop it is not an easy thing to check like in a tower for a pc. There is a free program called speccy by piriform that you can install and run and it gives you all the specs and details of your device and in some cases will show warnings of problems I am not sure if it would help any but it won't hurt to give it a try. Has the sound happened again once you turned it on? I noticed you said the laptop was on the floor, be sure anytime you use it that it does not have the vents on the bottom covered like with carpet, clothing, pillows etc it has to have good air flow at all times or it can cause over heating even if it does not feel hot. Using a special laptop pad with a built in fan is a good idea.

Raven for years, I've had laptops on a cutting board when I have it on my lap, the ottoman or anything soft. I never restrict the air flow. Also, I have the laptop on a cooling fan all the time, so when I move the laptop around I carry all three things (laptop, cooling fan and cutting board). I also remove the cutting board and have the cooling fan straddling my knees for even more circulation.

It was on the cooling fan, on the cutting board on the floor last nite, powered down completely. I can try your piriform specs. I won't understand a thing that it tells me, but I can let you and a computer geek friend know what it says.

I can't do it tonite, but I'll do it tomorrow.

That's excellent. Sometimes people don't know about air flow. I don't know if speccy can give you any help or not since we don't know exactly what is causing the alarm. Have you used it since that happened with no problems? If so I would just keep a close eye on it in case it is the battery. You don't want it blowing up or catching fire. You might Google the make and model along with known problems and also with battery problems.

I'm glad you didn't have a fire. My phone makes a "boop-boop" sound when the battery needs charging.
