Another struggling orange tree I have

So to me this tree looks pretty healthy besides the crazy limb pattern. The canopy has been pretty much chopped off on the middle. Whats like is on the right and left, but this thing has been so neglectted I don't even really know how to describe how twisted it was.

There was a huge branch in the center that has been cut with a chainsaw, whoever cut it was to lazy to go cut it some more. It was not able to be taken out from the tree without my getting my chainsaw and finishing the job. There just was a huge hanging dead limb in the dead center killing everything around it.

I almost want to cut off the left and right of the branches but there is actually some new fruit on it.

Originally I was going to trim everything up, but now I feel like I should maybe hold back and let this thing revive a little.

Should I be cutting off all the branches with thorns even though this thing is struggling hard?

I think the only thing left for this is to become a big bushy orange tree which im ok with.

Thoughts?

If that is a Citrus tree, that bark and aboslutely beautiful!!!

Yes it is citrus, it is some type of orange tree.

So your saying it looks fine and healthy despite the crazy haircut its got going?

Not sure if I should be pruning the branches with thorns or not

Clark, Your guess looks good to me. I lived in Florida for most of the 1990s, and learned a few things about citrus trees. One lesson a little old lady who lived next to my apartment complex in Sarasota taught me applies here: the old-time varieties (like the remnant grove in her yard) are generally very seedy. She raved about a variety called "Pineapple" and I have to agree: the fresh juice was amazing. But as she said it had to be fresh. The first day the oranges were picked they were mouth-wateringly delicious when squeezed. By the third day they were mundane. Anyway, I might also post pics of the leaves and fruit to the local extension service or to someone in the state (like a professor at a university with an agriculture program and an interest in citrus) and see what they say. I have an off center couch and I 'm struggling

I really need to see a photo of the whole space for perspective. Is the TV wall a full wall, with the TV off centered on it? If so, I'd honestly move the TV and center the couch versus trying to reorganize the entire space around a mis-placed television. Many cable providers now have wireless cable boxes which allows much more flexibility and less cost with relocating TVs. I'd solve the main problem versus band-aid around it. Especially if you are painting the room anyway. It's a new house, and I assume this is your main living space - do it right before you lock into other decisions. Once you establish the layout, then you can decide on colors for walls, drapes, accents. Revere pewter is a nice flexible greige that would allow for a refreshed look but still work with your couch color. A cream linen drape would brighten things right up and create a clean crisp look against the new wall color.

Could you post a closer pic of the bark? Yes, it's pretty, but citrus bark shouldn't look like that. It may be a problem. Lots of citrus varieties have thorns, it's not the best way to tell if it's foliage you want or not. Myself, I'd wait a few weeks before cutting again. But if it has bark issues, it may not matter.

Yes, that helps a lot. Now I can see that what I thought might be dead bark is just paint. That's good! Still tough to tell if the foliage is the good fruiting wood,(scion) or the rootstock foliage. It's not Trifoliate rootstock as that has triple leaves, but it could be cuban shaddock, another kind of rootstock. I think only time will tell at this point. Could very well be an orange.

Some can tell by crushing a leaf and smelling it, it will often smell like the fruit it is. Cuban shaddock's fruit is a lemon/pumelo cross, so probably smells like lemon. I have one, I'll check later. Orange leaves don't have much of a smell at all, so that could help.

Here's some closer pics of the ones closer towards the ground. I feel like these leaves are a lot bigger then ones growing past the white paint.

Also, I also figure orange tree leaves smelled like Fruit Loops. I can even remember as a kid going to FL and taking the neighbors orange tree leaves just to smell them!

I got that same nostalgic smell when I was trimming my Washington Orange (other users on here concluded that's what it was)

These big leaves down here have a lemon like smell too. I picked a leaf off the top that was really small and didn't really have a smell.

If you're watering with that hose, move it away from the trunk out to the drip line.

when i am watering it i have water flow away from the trunk and move it out. no watering was happening during these pics
