At the top of the page it says "discussions". Just getting the label right so that it gives the name of the plant without detracting from the beauty of the orchid display is a difficult thing. Tried and proven is the suggestion from Alberta. The number of orchids in this discussion is a 1000 and if the nature of the display(s) is something like this. There are problems. This display has nil labels and even if every plant has a label, judging panels are not going around reading labels. They do not give a fig about the name of the plant. They are there to judge the flowers. Different story at the end of the judging when they have found the Champions.... in the award process the name does become important. The display had (from memory) about 180 orchids and in displays of this kind i fail to see how you could put a label on every plant because there were many tiny plants in the display. 1000 plants is a big number and if the plants are spread over a number of big and small displays there is always the chance that a panel will miss looking at a plant. It would be much easier to judge a show where the 1000 orchids are arranged in classes, but even at this sort of show i've never seen labels on every plant.

SouthCG, Good question. The data sheet says that the seeds can be planted in the fall or spring. Regarding spring: "Spring Production: Sow in January for natural flowering in early May to early June dependent on temperature. " I have had "northern" plants grow in my garden; maybe this will serve as an annual for you. I have a picture of the trays which I will post when I get the camera hooked to this computer. But it just shows some nice seedlings in trays. Like many of my fall seedlings, they probably will just sit around getting established in the ground and then take off in the spring when the time is right. That's when I will supply as many pictures as noteworthy. I still am keeping my fingers crossed because failure could still happen with this variety even though I grow guaras regularly. Bob

We do not post publicly how the Stout vote breaks down by region since that is not a requirement to win the Award. You can find the HM and AM results posted by region, since votes must come from 4 regions for the HM and 8 regions for the AM. But with the Stout,it is simply the cultivar that gets the most votes. The number of judges varies by region. There are more judges in the regions with the most AHS members. Region 2 has our largest number of members, and also the largest number of judges. Region 4 is the second largest region and it has the second largest number of judges. Some regions with low numbers of AHS members ( Regions 7, 8,9) also have fewer judges.I don't think that having the largest regions represented by the largest number of judges would skew the vote. It would just give an accurate representation of what our membership reflects. Most, but not all, judges vote each year!
