so you win lottery... describe your new kitchen!!
Comments (28)I love reading this thread! Lots of great dreams. I like the idea of having a beverage and snack area in the kitchen. That would sure make my life easier as a lot of the time I'm just going in the kitchen for a cup of coffee and a muffin or a drink of water and my kitchen is in the back of the house. I would either buy or build a different house with my mega-millions. The kitchen would be the center of the home, not like mine is now, way in the back with no room for anyone to be in there. I'd get a fridge with METAL handles (what's with these plastic handles on fridges these days?!). One of the best things I ever had when I was young was an OLD and small fridge in one of my apts. but it had metal shelves that swung out so you could see what was in the back. Not sure why they don't make fridges like that anymore, but I'd have one custom made! I'm also thinking I might like a prep sink, it might make me more inclined to wash dishes as I go if I didn't have to do both prep and clean up in one small sink like I have now. As it is, I shove the dirty dishes to one side for "later." And I would like my kitchen to open up to a dining and family/living room. Wide open. And I have always wanted a breakfast nook, with a window! And a little desk area with a laptop and small printer and then shelves above for my cookbooks. BUT, my real dream is that dream kitchen above and then a little breezeway/foyer out the back door of the kitchen, leading to a canning/preserving kitchen. That one would have a huge freezer on the wall, a large pantry, and a root cellar. Big prep sink and cupboards for spices, jars, etc. Anyway, you get the idea. And in front of the breezway a huge decorative herb/flower garden, and on the other side of the canning kitchen--the vegetable garden, barn for the chickens and small milk cow, and orchard. That's my mega-million dream. And here in NE PA it would be mega millions. I have a colleague who is living that dream but it is on a farm that was in his wife's family for generations. Over a million to purchase something like that today. Oh, and I want a back porch to store all the weird things I never use except in the summer, and I want a playroom with a bar in it. I want it to be one of those tropical themed bars, lol! And then my own personal chef, so that I could just focus on growing and preserving the stuff, since that would be more than enough to keep me busy....See MoreKitchen designer, general contractor, or both?
Comments (6)Oh...boy!. First time here and can I ever tell you about kitchen designers and contractors! I just finished my kitchen. Initially, the KD company had a contractor who works for them if a client needs it but apparently this guy didn't want my little 30K job because it was "too small". I had to hire my own contractors for electrical, demo of the old kitchen, and plumbing. (I later found out that these contractors, whom I know from another job, also install kitchens but at the time, I didn't bother to ask....) Anyhow, the KD mis-measured and a switch was half hidden behind a cabinet. He arrives to check it out while my contractors are here. They discuss it and it is agreed that the switch rather than the cabinet will have to be moved. Since my contractors are on the premises they may as well move it...ah yah, right! It cost me an extra $300 to move the switch because it wasn't easy as it was attached to a support beam. I paid the contractors and then deducted this amount as a back charge from the final payment owed to the KD company. Then, the KD threatens to take me to small claims court because he says why should his firm pay when they could have chosen their own contractor! Say what? Their contractor didn't want my measly job. This was their mistake. They never told me to wait or found a solution for over a month and they waited until the final payment was due to tell me this, even though I warned them repeatedly... Turns out the KD is mad at my contractors because they insulted his "plumbing knowledge" at some point. Now, I'm being forced to pay for a job the KD screwed up and let me tell you, there are numerous other measurement issues that have occurred as well...like brackets that are too big for a peninsula and a food processor that doesn't fit anywhere, despite the KD measuring it to fit! So, friends...the moral of this story is....If you have found a contractor who has experience installing a kitchen, don't rule them out just because they aren't bona fide KDs! I did and look where it landed me! (The latest is the KD is now trying to make me pay for 4 wooden counter support brackets that are apparently $100 each -- replacements for others that didn't match the kitchen hardware...presumably the KD's way of winning this round!) How many ways can you spell RI-DON-CULOUS!...See MoreMy Kitchen Was Nominated for an Award!
Comments (26)Thanks to everyone who voted for us! While we don't stand to gain anything personally, it would be fun to say we have an "award winning" kitchen! I must admit some of the competition is pretty daunting... did you see the breakfast / dining area in project #23? Stunning! Also, as Lisa_a points out, we don't have any stuffed bears at our place... lol!...See MoreHow am I doing so far with my budget - large kitchen!
Comments (15)Gooster, Our appliance budget is high... it kind of snowballed. We were originally going to keep some of the appliances since they work perfectly (15 years old, most are Whirlpool Gold). When we started looking into things the Viking Cooktop and double oven wasn't that much more, the Sub Zero beverage center wasn't that much more, etc so we decided to get new appliances. The real budget buster was the Sub Zero French Door refrigerator which is about $10K. We have a 1 year old counter depth French door Samsung fridge and we weren't planning to replace it. However I did not realize these larger refrigerators (36" x 84") require different cabinetry so we started designing it to fit the Sub Zero (for the future) and then just decided to replace the Samsung and bite the bullet. (We have a 2nd kitchen in our basement that we will use the fridge in). My husband is still boggled by the $10K fridge, lol. He keeps asking what else it does besides keep food cold, lol....See Morecat_mom
