Using 3 wires on a 4 wire cable?
Comments (3)I don't know if it's permissible (and I don't think it looks as nice) but when wiring lv alarm wiring, we often cut off unused wires flush with the outer insulation. You will also see alarm, telephone and other lv wires with spares wrapped back around up the outer insulation. In 120/240 land, I'm sure capping is preferred. If one of the other conductors fails in the future, the 'spare' wire can be brought into service provided it's re-coloured at the ends to depict what it's doing, ie, red or black....See MoreCooktop - 2 wire to 220v 3 wire
Comments (11)I've been wondering why they didn't do this a long, long time ago. We've got a lot of older grandfathered 3-wire installations, but code now wants 4-wire receptacles, with ground/neutral seperate. Alright, fine, but I always wondered: Why do we have 120/240 appliances anyway? Clothes dryers tend to have a 120V motor, but I can see no reason not to use a 240V motor instead. I can't see anything in a typical range that uses 120, with the possible exception of some of the electronic controls on modern ovens, which are low-voltage internally anyway, so if you're gonna use a 120-to-whatever transformer, why not a 240-to-whatever one? It would seem, to me, a lot simpler a solution!...See MoreTime switch has 3 wires, box has 4. How do I wire?
Comments (8)Ignoring the ground wires(since you know where they go) I can't be any clearer than this. You have two terminals(the part where you push the wire in next to the screw terminal is the same terminal, maybe that is your sticking point?) on the old switch. Let's call them line and load. The line terminal is the one with the 'mystery' wire. The load terminal is the other one. Take All the wires on the load side, marrette them to the load Side wire on your new device. Take the wire from the other terminal, marrette it to the other wire on the new device. Ta-da!...See MoreConvert oven hooked up now with 3 wire to 4, Wht wire short
Comments (4)Thx for the replies. Yes the area I am talking about is in the junction box. I have read a lot about this and yes I agree that cutting the wire shorter was a mistake. I just copied what was done with the old oven. It is done now so this is what I have to work with. I talked to my electrical inspector for the city today and he said the wiring is fine the way it is. New 4 conductor is better and code for new construction but 3 conductor is fine and the wire being alum is fine as well. I talked to 2 electricians at work and they said they would replace it so this is where this all started. So now I am thinking of just keeping the current setup with a crimp connector just like it has been for the past 55 years....See MoreUser
