Just for fun - find your house on Google earth - satellite view

and take a screenshot of it. Put it in a folder or somewhere you can find it in a few years and then compare it with your current view.

I took a screenshot of my house (easier if you google your neighbor's house so you don't have a big balloon in your yard) so I could use it to map out my plants - easier than making a drawing. The current photo looks like 2 or 3 years ago. The last time I looked, it was a shot from about 8 years ago. I thought I had a screen shot of it, but could only find part of the front yard. Still, what a difference! If we live here long enough, I hope to see a progression as I reduce the amount of grass I have to mow.

Google saves the old pictures and you can see them. At the top left, under your address, there is a little clock with arrows around them and a drop down. If you click it, you can see all the old pictures they have. There is only one from 2007 and 2012 for my house, but you may have more.

This thing amazes me. I found it quite a while ago and have watched as they have updated the photos. At first it showed our place without the garage we had built. Now it is there - and they took the picture during one of my brother's visits - his van is in the yard! How cool is that? On the other hand, it sort of creeps me out to think there are planes up there taking pictures of my house. Dh (who used to be in...ahem...a high security government service) says they don't show the REAL pictures - you could identify all your plants in those!

Sorry, but I am a school teacher, and I think it is a violation to my right of privacy. My students have told me about where I live, what I drive, and many details about my privacy that is none of their business. I have been hoping that the courts will make this illegal. If a group of kids can use this and find out all about your home, what can the thieves do? Guess where the kids put their information --- on Facebook, of course. By the way they don't walk, they are in little cars, and they update their information regularly, and very quickly. The walkers pretend to survey your property, but they are really getting as much information as they can from the ground, then from the air. They walk through the backs of the houses, and drive the fronts. Sorry to be odd man out, but now I can anticipate about 160 kids running through my garden at Halloween. Sammy

Even Google maps is not always up to date. Just 2 weeks ago I had need to visit a friend in a 2 year old sub division, Google could not find the address. Yahoo could not find it either. Mapquest did and showed a whole sub division. On trying Google earth now I had a location it showed fields and not a single house in sight.

Are you talking about street view photo Lynn Marie? Either way, when I click on the little clock, nothing happens. I know that a previous street view photo was taken when my dd was in college and her roommate's car was left here during Christmas vacation. Now it's a summer photo from 2012. The last satellite view I remember was taken right after we had planted and watered the garden. When I made this post, the satellite view showed our old pickup, and today it has our new pickup, so it's really current.

Edited to add: I just looked it up and it has to be Google Earth 5 or later. My laptop needs to go to the shop so I don't want to download it now, but will later.

Yes, I was talking about street view. I must have the newer version.
