Is anyone here signed up for Google Earth?

You can type in your address, or the coordinates and zoom right to your house from outer space. It's like hovering over your house in a spaceship.

I can see the house and outbuildings, trees and their shadows, even round bales of hay and cows that were in the field when the photos were made. I estimate the photos to be about 3 years old, made when the trees were leafless.

It gave me a visual 'map' of the whole garden and surroundings. Fun.

I use Google Earth frequently to visually see an area that I'm not familiar with in traveling. It is such a big help to see the intersections, highway entrance lanes and more. I also use it to see areas for real estate for our future relocation to a rural area. There is a new map like Google Earth that I briefly came across today and I like the 3D much better. It was something like MS Live...? I bookmarked it on another computer, as I was in a hurry looking up directions to an event.

Neat whaas. Is that a pile of dirt in the middle of your driveway? Did ya see the mess in mine? Must be from after I changed the MarkVIII's tranny fluid. The individual plants are really distinct in yours. The plan shows well. Imoressive using it to olan driveways. I remember about five or six years back we asked a customer if their neighbors had a blue awning and a pool.

I do as Owbist mentioned, I use google maps and the street view options. I think the results of both are likely about the same age. for a different view and possibly more recent try the one by microsoft, for me it shows very different views than what I see on google. Was called microsoft virtual earth now called bing maps, you can just google that. When searching for homes to buy I used all of them. you should also take a look at flash earth it lets you switch between several of them including google earth and microsoft virtual earth Flash Earth Viewer

Are you talking about street view photo Lynn Marie? Either way, when I click on the little clock, nothing happens. I know that a previous street view photo was taken when my dd was in college and her roommate's car was left here during Christmas vacation. Now it's a summer photo from 2012. The last satellite view I remember was taken right after we had planted and watered the garden. When I made this post, the satellite view showed our old pickup, and today it has our new pickup, so it's really current. Edited to add: I just looked it up and it has to be Google Earth 5 or later. My laptop needs to go to the shop so I don't want to download it now, but will later.

Well, I played with it for a while. We don't have street addresses out here in the country and the landmarks are mismarked on the maps. So I can get close to our place but zooming in just makes everything look like mush. I'll have Rick check it out with me later and see if he can get it to zoom in correctly. On the USDA maps it's easy to pick out our pivots but they don't show up on this map. Kinda weird.
Thanks though, it was fun.

Memo, When you zoom in quickly, it takes several seconds for the pixels to 'settle' and the picture clears up. You can't get close enough to identify your individual plants; it gets too fuzzy. You can see the overall scene, which helps in determining bed shapes.

I have a better idea of relationships of hardscapes since I saw this view. I'm thinking that I can use it to sketch up the overall plan and add the newer beds.

We googled our place last night, LOL, good lord have I ever got a lot jammed in a small area, greenhouse, shade house, pergola, shed and covered Koi pool area, all surrounded with what looks like jungle.

I have on old version of Google Earth and got all kinds of free directions. I updated and if I want directions part I guess I have to pay. I'll use the old version and have the direction feature.

We had a good look at our street and from what we saw it looks like the photo was taken last year in April. We could see the two planks we put across the goldfish pool which we use to kneel on to pull out plants before emptying and cleaning. Our new neighbor's car was in their driveway and the house further up the street didn't have their new deck on. If I could remember the day we cleaned the pool, I could have given the exact date the photo was taken. Amazing.

It is a very cool pasttime.

I tried looking at my place awhile back. My area hasn't been mapped (yet) for some reason. There are no images of the road on which I live. It cuts off about half a mile west of here.

Bummer.

I used mine to help design my garden. I printed out the image of our house and yard, then placed a clear piece of plastic over it. (Like what you use with an over head projecter.) I traced the outlines of the bones (house, fence, and such) in permanent marker. Now I can use dry erase markers to try out different designs. You could also do the same thing with a graphics program on the computer. I did mine on plastic so I could sit out in the yard and play with it.

Memo...it will never be clear in rural areas since they concentrate on populated areas. Like my former ranch in CO? Really can't see anything clearly. The closer you are to a larger city, the more detail. In Denver the most recent shot of Mike's former home showed the moving van we used to move back east lol! Funny since it was only there 2 days before we headed off.

Actually, you don't really need Google Earth anymore to see your house. We've been using Earth since it came out (techies that we are). However, now if you go to Google Maps, and switch to "Satellite" view you've got a similar picture of your house.

This thing amazes me. I found it quite a while ago and have watched as they have updated the photos. At first it showed our place without the garage we had built. Now it is there - and they took the picture during one of my brother's visits - his van is in the yard! How cool is that?

On the other hand, it sort of creeps me out to think there are planes up there taking pictures of my house. Dh (who used to be in...ahem...a high security government service) says they don't show the REAL pictures - you could identify all your plants in those!
