Speaking of TV, is anybody watching Younger?

Younger is the half hour show on TVLand about a 40 year old woman rebooting her life and pretending to be 26 so she can get hired.

I really like it. It's absurd, but the actress, Sutton Foster, really is 40 and she really does look remarkably young, so it's not hard to suspend disbelief. I especially love the thriftpster chic outfits she wears too. :) The show is very cute. The only jarring part, to me, is how little she knows about anything tech and social, even though she has a teenager, but I choose to think of it as suburban blindness rather than an age thing. :)

How in the world did I miss all that? LOL I actually do watch the show, or at least I have it on while I'm doing other things. Guess I'm a very bad TV watcher as I'm now watching RHBH and am unsure whether to swag a finger at Kim or Taylor for the "Camille thing". Caught the end of the first showing and was almost in tears over Kim's and Kyle's fight. So sad for sisters to be at such odds. So sad for Kim. :(

I have read this whole thread as my son is also having similar problems. He didn't crawl till after 1, he didn't walk till later, he always made gibberish sounds with little words. He didn't start putting words in sentences till he was almost 4 and its still only a few words. He has a small attention span unless its something hes really interested in. To get him to cease doing an activity usually results in him getting very upset over it and us having difficulty calming him down. He can get rather loud and hysterical. He will keep doing behaviours he has been told specifically not to. Of a morning before we are up he will just screech & make bird noises out the window, he makes beeping noises like his grandfathers van that backs out and throws things & just general bad behaviour until we get up. If you ask him a question he will just repeat a couple words back of the question at times, if its one he knows hell answer. He had trouble making choices he will decide one and then when given that he will want the other and get upset over not getting it. He will say hello to people, look at them and us and smile and laughs, sometimes he just gets the giggles. I don't know how to toilet train him, he goes to school next year and he just doesn't know when he needs to go, he will pee if put on the toilet but that's it, there's no regularity to when he goes. He loves to sing & do action songs like clapping etc, loves TV, he knows and recognises both numbers and the alphabet, knows shapes, colours, knows his name and can spell it as well as his Nan's and pops and dads. He cannot write it, doesn't take an interest in drawing can draw a circle and a line and the letter L but that's about it. He has been attending daycare since before he was 1 as he is an only child and we have no friends with children and don't go out a lot. They referred us to a speech, physio and OT therapist who he has seen a few times a year. He is progressing but very slowly, he is way behind other children. They also put him into an early intervention group to try and get him ready for school, he loved the activities, he loves being around other kids he just doesn't interact with them. They find him strange. He has now been referred to a team to see if he is on the spectrum, they have done a part evaluation of him and are referring him to a developmental psychologist in January before deciding their diagnosis. He also has trouble with toe walking and W sitting. He refused to feed himself off and on for awhile until i took to counting to 5 and if he hadnt taken a mouthfull I put him straight to bed without finishing, he now eats his food thank godness for now especially if mummy starts counting. This is all new to me, I am a first time mum, I was an only child and also used to toe walk so did my mother. I have little experience in knowing what's normal for kids at what age so this has been tough. Its been tough realising that a lot of parents are having conversations with their kids by now and telling them things and are able to teach them things about the world etc and I have never had that communication with my son. Yes I am afraid of what putting a label on my son will do but I don't feel qualified to help him alone. I am worried about his future and am hoping he will continue to develop. He is a happy little boy mostly he loves to smile and laugh and sing. He loves cars and trains and anything electronic, going out anywhere is a great time for him. He has no problem with strangers or new environments, he loves to explore and learn how things work. Just don't leave him with a book or a picture as he will rip it up in tiny pieces even though he's been told repetitively not to. When he was younger he used to like opening and closing doors.

From an American standpoint, it does sometimes take a bit to understand a British accent, but I've never found them difficult, it just takes a few minutes to adjust to the different intonations. That said, I live in New England, I'm a bit of an Anglophile anyway, and I've heard British accents all my life via PBS and BBC America so I may be in the minority. Now some Irish and Scots accents -- yikes. It takes me a while, but I can usually understand the speaker if I can just listen for a bit. Rapid speech would definitely be difficult. As far as "falling for" the accent, I admit guilt! I once took a college class just to be able to listen to the professor speak. He could have been reading the phone book and I would still have been entranced.

I watched the CBS shows and I've watched the Dateline and some of the Dr. Phil. I don't know what to think, other than believing an intruder is the least-likely scenario. Not impossible, but very unlikely, due to the way the note was written, the way the body was discovered, and Burke's interviews shortly after the crime and 18 months after the crime. Burke said he heard his mother come into his room and then go out of it looking for JonBenet, and then he heard her in hysterics (as he said in the interview afterward "going psycho") and just stayed in bed pretending to sleep or trying to sleep, rather than go try to find out what had happened. Picture your own kids. You burst into your 9 year old's room and then just as suddenly depart. You are frantically crying and screaming, alerting your spouse and then placing a 911 call. Your 9 year old doesn't freeze with fear. They don't hide. They also don't come ask you what's wrong. They don't go find dad and ask what's wrong. They just stay in bed and wait. The only reason I can think of for him to do this is either that he was used to the sound of adults "going psycho" in other parts of the house and did not find that unusual/alarming--or he knew what the problem was and was waiting to find out how his parents were going to handle it.

I am watching. The last couple of episodes have not been that great. I do wonder how long this show can go on. I can't see it as a Sex and the City thing lasting 10 years.

I do wonder about myself...if I had to pretend to be younger. Could I? I look young. People always think I am my husband's daughter. But, do I want to pretend to fit in? No,. I like the confidence I've gained and I also do not need the approval from my friends like the character Liza. You could say she went from having a controlling husband to a group of friends who now control her.

I am also old fashioned. I didn't like how she apologized to her male friend for being mad about him having sex with someone else the next night. I do not like that blasé type attitude towards intimacy.

If anyone is interested in seeing the show, they're running all episodes to date on Sunday evening on TVLand.

GWLake, I agree that, as usual, the continuing episodes aren't as good as the first couple, and it's not the kind of show that Sex and the City was (though I wasn't a fan of that show). I don't think her husband was controlling, however. More absent and untrustworthy (gambling addict, then philanderer). I don't see that her friends control her either. Yes, she's trying to fit in, but she interferes with them just as much or more as they do her. It's really more that with this group there's an instant, filters off, intimacy that's more characteristic of people that age.

Interesting question about whether one would want to try to pass for younger. I had to go to a big meeting on my birthday and everyone who said Happy Birthday asked if it was my 29th. Everyone. It was hysterical. But, of course, the point is there's no way I could pass for 29. I could probably pass for mid-30's if I were able to remember which things I wasn't supposed to be able to remember. I have a genetically youngish complexion and my hands and neck aren't bad. People generally think I'm substantially younger than I am based on looks. But would I want to live a lie? Never!

Would I do it if it were the only way I could get a decent job in my field? I don't know at what point of desperation I'd be willing to throw my scruples to the wind, but everyone has one. Where it involves legal papers and signing oaths, I probably couldn't go. I wouldn't want to do anything illegal. It used to be that using a false name wasn't illegal so long as one didn't do it for purposes of fraud. I imagine that the would be the same with a false age, too. Since age discrimination is illegal, adjusting the age to meet expectations only tilts it back in favor of what it should have been to begin with. But I think that's all illegal nowadays because of the post-911 freedoms eliminations, and even if it isn't, employment applications often have avowals of truth, which would make it fraud. Plus, I don't think in the data age that you can actually get away with it. Big employers have simple background checks that would find that her stated year of graduation wasn't correct.

Would I continue it to get something going with a guy I really liked? That's harder and easier. It would be so tempting, but who wants a relationship based on a lie. I don't think I could. Especially because a 26-year-old guy dating a 26-year-old girl, even if he isn't thinking actively about it (because guys rarely do) has to have lingering in his subconscious that the girl he's wild about is a potential mate and mother. When I was that age, one of my friends married a 40-year-old woman, but he knew exactly who she was when they met, and there were a lot of issues that wouldn't have been there with a woman his own age.

Every generation criticizes the sexual mores of their children, including back in history when they criticized them for being mealy-mouthed prudes.
