Are these brand new? Small bands planted last season? The standard pruning instructions are for established roses.

Michael, I bought Lady of Shalott (the top photo) as a bare-root last year.
I bought Heritage as a potted rose 2 years ago.

No further pruning is necessary unless you happen to find some dead twigs on the second plant. They look like very young roses and they need those canes to grow and flourish.

Thanks, Ingrid. There are no dead twigs, just skinny canes with tiny swelling buds. I was thinking that I was doing this all wrong and that the canes are just too thin to support any blooms.

The small canes will support leaves that manufacture food energy to help the plants grow. Once the plants build some size, you can prune down to a sturdy framework each spring.

That is the problem I'm seeing. These roses had larger canes in the past, which are dwindling to the little twigs. Roses purchased as grafted plants don't look like that. It isn't a pruning problem, but the roses aren't thriving. Maybe they need larger pots?

I agree with mad_gallica--they should be bigger at this point. Maybe re-pot, or adjust watering and fertilizer--something is wrong.

I too agree that these don't look in good shape. Maybe something is wrong with the pot substrata. I would unpot them and take a look. Maybe they become too dry or too wet. I also don't like mulching pots, one never knows what's happening underneath the mulch. I somehow feel they have not developed a proper root system.
