Does Anyone Grows Romantica Roses in Cal?
Comments (16)The Romanticas do well for me here on the So. Calif coast. I grow Jardins de Bagatelle, Peter Mayle, Yves Piaget, Eden, Comtesse de Provence, Johann Strauss, Jean Giono. I'd say most are pretty darned disease-free, except for Jardins de Bagatelle, which seems prone to rust. My Comtesse has issues with its blooms... they tend to fry quickly and sometimes smell slightly of vinegar. Odd, since it's next to Yves, who has long-lasting blooms. Yves will ball if it is rainy as it's opening. My Eden is on the north side of a six foot tall wood fence, conditions which should promote rust at certain times of the year, and it has never had rust (and I'm in rust central). I ditched Abbaye de Cluny a number of years ago b/c I thought it was a lesser version of Just Joey, which I like a lot better. The only one I gave away recently was Rouge Royale, for the reasons folks mentioned above. The person who I gave it to is happy with its occasional great blooms. John, I did not find Yves to be difficult to propagate... I made several cuttings of it a number of years ago. Romanticas are really just HTs. Susan...See MoreFirst blooms for some of my Austins
Comments (12)Dan, get a Schreiner's Iris catalog or go to their website www.schreinersgardens.com. I don't know if they carry the exact one I have, but their "Like Wow" iris looks very similar to mine. They also have a couple others that are similar--one with slightly lighter purple/lavender falls and the other with dark purple falls. Watch out though--that catalog is intoxicating. You may end up ordering multiples of about 4 or 5 iris listed there. : ) And thank you everyone for your comments. Munstead Woods seems to be a bit hit with you as well as with me. Comments (14)I have a Golden Celebration, and I really like it. It is beginning to bloom now. I was hoping to get a couple of flowers off of it and put them with a couple of Munstead Woods, but my MWs are looking rather poor this spring. They are quite dark this time. They started blooming before I could get fertilizer out. I didn't prune much or fertilize because of our weird weather patterns. It has been up and down wildly. For instance, April 10th it was 88 degrees here. Two days later on April 12th it was between 25 and 30 degrees. It has been doing this repeatedly from March to early May so I have just waited and not tried to provoke all kinds of new growth only to get froze. Perhaps as the season goes on I can get a bouquet together to see how it looks. I also have that new climber Golden Opportunity, and It has a flower on it. It is also a gold like Golden Celebration, but the form is different. I am going to watch it to see how it does. I am having some issues with my cameras because they appear to have been set up for Windows or Mac systems. I am using Linux, so some things don't work quite the same way, and I am having some difficulty. However, I will have to see if I can get it all to work and get some pictures....See MoreDavid Austin Roses - help me choose!
Comments (21)Kristine thanks for mentioning that you're not fond of RD the person. I liked many of his books as a kid but since then I have learned that as a person he was very problematic to put it diplomatically. I also would not want. aa rose named after him...See MoreKrista_5NY
