Why do I hear a loud drip/knock noise on the uppermost floor?

I sleep
on the uppermost floor of the house (3rd floor), and there are people
living in the basement, and it seems like whenever someone down there
uses water, I hear a very loud drip noise that seems to vary in intensity
randomly. I will hear a loud one maybe 2 or 3 times in a row, then
softer ones, then a loud one again. I am guessing it happens whenever
someone down there takes a shower or turns on and off the faucet repeatedly.
I just noticed there is a big metal pipe right next to my window, but I
do not understand why I can hear this noise so loud, how can water being
used downstairs somehow be going up to the 3rd floor?
I have researched and it could be hot water expanding the pipe, or it could be a drip falling a long distance down a pipe
But this does not make sense because why would the water travel up to my floor?

This is confusing to me because all my searches show people on the lower floor being affected, not the reverse..
