Pantry shelving
Comments (15)I used to call our pantry "The Pit of Despair". It's a standard reach-in closet with sliding doors right by the kitchen door. Initially, it was nothing more than a 6' wire shelving unit with the trash can underneath, an overflowing wall-mount mail organizer, and a huge pile of random yet essential stuff on the floor. Hence, "The Pit of Despair". We removed the doors and installed 12" shelves over a counter. We wrapped 8" shelves around the side wall and put some customized cabinets under the counter. With the right space, I will always do something like this in any house I own. I see no downside whatsoever to have a small section of counter tucked away into a functional utility space. The key, like any kitchen project, is to map out what needs to go into the space, and design the space for the need. My little reach-in closet comfortably stores: wicker baskets roasting pan huge party coffee percolator 2-3 dozen cookbooks 2 medium bins for coffee and tea lunch bags on their own shelf ALL of my dry foods (which didn't fit before) bread machine (on counter) crock pot (on counter) snack bin (on counter) microwave (on counter) root veggie storage work/school bag cubbies pullout trash pullout recycling large "floorless cabinet" for DH's carboys I love the counter the best - just enough room to set a dish out of the microwave or a stirring spoon at the crock pot. Not enough space to collect clutter. Keeps the lower portion less dusty, takes no time to wipe down with the kitchen counters. Do a search for pantries on here - I've seen some beautiful and inspiring storage spaces....See MorePull-Out Pantry Doors vs Roll-Out Shelves
Comments (4)I agree with you- I think pullout shelves are better. Though, unfortunately I can't tell you from personal experience, as my carpenter is telling me that they will be delivered tomorrow morning first thing- (if I had a dime for every time he's promised delivery- been waiting since February!) Anyhow, I do have the pantry pullout on one side of my floor to ceiling cupboards (have 18" cabinets on either side of fridge). I had to get that as I wanted space to hang brooms, mops, vacuum attachments, etc, and I could get a side mount pullout attached to one side, leaving room on the other side. The problem is access, even though it is full extension, you have the shelf above hampering your reach. I guess it's not a problem if you have lots of space between shelves, but then what's the point in that? My pullout shelves will be about 4" deep, with a half circle cutout in front- if they do arrive tomorrow, I can take pics- I am SO looking forward to having them installed- been using 16" deep shelves in a 24" deep cupboard, pain in the butt to reach to the back to access items. As you can see, shelves made just a little too wide!!!...See MorePantry cabinets: pull-out drawers or shelves?
Comments (31)You can create this look by installing a 15" 3 drawer base on the bottom and then a 15" deep upper cabinet that is tall (depends on the height of your cabinetry) that sits right on top. We are planning something like this (see computer rendering). Someone on Houzz in an old thread suggested you can add a nice detail by installing in a thick horizontal board over the lowers with a nice edge detail and the uppers sit on top. It is a timeless look, IMO...See MoreRollouts instead of shelves? No pantry.
Comments (13)Blue222q i love my full height pantry without pullouts. I don't like the 2 step drawer door thing, I feel like they take up more space and I feel like they are a little wimpy compared to a solid shelf (no tracks etc.) with that said I feel like it depends on what you store there. it works well for us because I can really stock it up with my big stuff ... it's like my after Costco shopping place :) big box stuff like cereals, chips, snacks, bars, paper goods, extra case of drinks, and large container items. I would think if you plan to put a lot of cans, jars, bottles in there then maybe yes rollouts. You won't be able to see that kind of small stuff very well without it. I use both my lazy suzans for that kind of stuff easy to see and spin around. I like your layout. My mom had that angled counter with sink like you have, but her's was bar height so you couldn't the see sink from great room but it was always a big hangout spot to grab a stool and visit with people working in the kitchen....See MoreTexas_Gem
