Pull-Out Pantry Doors vs Roll-Out Shelves

Hi All,

I want the space between the fridge and wall-oven to be full-height, counter-depth cabinets. I've decided on drawers for the base cabinets but I've been trying to find pull-out pantry hardware and baskets that will fit above and started wondering why I don't just use roll-out shelves with rails instead. This seems to me to have some advantages. #1. If you open the door and see what you want, you just pluck it off the shelf. No need to haul out an entire cabinet into the room to get access. Or, if it's behind a bit or in the back, you are only rolling out a single shelf, not the whole works. One of the cabinets will be 15", the other 24". Here's a look, what would be the problem with rolling shelves instead of pull-out cabinets?

I agree with you- I think pullout shelves are better. Though, unfortunately I can't tell you from personal experience, as my carpenter is telling me that they will be delivered tomorrow morning first thing- (if I had a dime for every time he's promised delivery- been waiting since February!)

Anyhow, I do have the pantry pullout on one side of my floor to ceiling cupboards (have 18" cabinets on either side of fridge). I had to get that as I wanted space to hang brooms, mops, vacuum attachments, etc, and I could get a side mount pullout attached to one side, leaving room on the other side. The problem is access, even though it is full extension, you have the shelf above hampering your reach. I guess it's not a problem if you have lots of space between shelves, but then what's the point in that?

My pullout shelves will be about 4" deep, with a half circle cutout in front- if they do arrive tomorrow, I can take pics- I am SO looking forward to having them installed- been using 16" deep shelves in a 24" deep cupboard, pain in the butt to reach to the back to access items.
As you can see, shelves made just a little too wide!!!

Thanks Raehelen, please do post some pictures and let me know how they work out. The shelves do look really nice, sorry they're too big.

Drawers all the way! Get as wide as you can, so you won't have as many stacks. I have 6 drawer stacks but no more than 3 in a row. It is easy finding things as they are put away in zones. There are the pots/pans drawers, the bowls/fry pans drawer, the daily dishes drawer, the cups/glasses drawer, round tupperware drawer, square/rectangle tupperware drawer, baking drawers (2), junk drawer, keys & family notebook drawer & misc dh stuff, stamps, pens/pencils/crayon and checkbook drawer, my drawer for work stuff and pocketbook, foils and oven mitt drawer, silverware one, several utensil ones (serving stuff one, cooking stuff one, measuring stuff, cutting boards one, food processor stuff one, etc....), one for lunch bags and water bottles, cookie sheets and one that has sone light bulbs and medicine which will move out once we get the shelves in our master medicine cab. Not sure what will go in there.... Once you set it up logically, it is easy to remember. Post it notes for the first few days help. I had rollouts in the last kitchen before we moved here and thought they were great. We moved here into a kitchen with no drawer stacks and only had shallow top drawers. Our new kitchen is so much better than even the pullout setup. As you know better, you do better. Thanks to GW, I went with all drawers other than the sink base. If we did not have water filters in the sink cab, we'd have done drawers there too.

If I understand correctly, your current 48" wide pantry has 16" deep shelves, but the new 36" wide pantry would have full-depth (24") roll-out shelves? I currently have a 24" wide x 24" deep pantry w/ roll out shelves. Although you may well be able to fit the same amount of foodstuffs in the new one, I find that I struggle WAY more trying to keep my pantry organized--MUCH more so than when I had a walk-in closet w/ 14" deep shelves. Yes, I can fill this deeper one very full, BUT I CAN'T SEE WHAT'S IN IT EASILY!! In my former house/pantry, I knew-and could see--for example, that I had 4 cans of green beans (lined up from front to back of shelf). And next to that was a row w/ only 2 cans of corn. Ok, time to buy more corn. It was SO much easier to organize and stay organized w/ the shallow depth pantry. But in my current, deep one, the corn may have to be placed farther back, behind the green beans, to begin w/. Then things get lost and shifted around out of place ALL the time b/c you cannot see at a glance what is in there. The item you're looking for can just get buried by all the other stuff! Never had that problem before--and not planning on having it again, after our planned kitchen remodel at the end of this year--I'm going to have a 6' wide x 15" deep pantry built for that very reason. High up is where big things should go--tall things, that you can take off the shelf by holding on to the BOTTOM of the thing. And yes, lightweight things. I think that high-up shelves SHOULD be pullouts. Then, you can reach the stuff in the back more easily--because you will actually access them from the SIDES. Ditto for the bottom-most shelves. I don't want to have to dig way in the back, AND low down. The two lower shelves SHOULD be pullouts. And I haven't done it, but I fantasize about having at least 1 more shelf (all fo them pullouts) than most people think you should have, so that I have them pretty closely spaced, w/ no wasted headroom. In fact, probably I'd have TWO more pullout shelves. If I couldln't have *more* than 6 shelves (I'd probably want 8), then the middle shelves would be the fixed ones. (And I'd have them made a bit shorter than the others, bcs then I'd put back-of-the-door baskets to use up the space in the front of the pantry, and to keep the fixed shelf from being so deep that stuff gets lost in the back.) And I'd lay my canned goods on their sides, so I can see the labels. And, because then the cans would not be very tall, and I could put another pullout very close above it.

Definitely walk in if you have the space in your floorplan (especially for new construction). With the walkin or reduced depth pantries with doors everything is visible and you can plan space for brooms, infrequently used appliances, and bulk storage. Walkin pantries have standard household doors which will last for decades. Downsides of pullouts are that they can move abruptly, which can cause items to shift or tip over. They are also are more fragile since the glides bear a lot of weight even with reinforcement. I can certainly imagine restless kids or grandkids slamming the pullout pantry closed or trying to climb up the shelves like a ladder.

I had roll-outs in the house before this one. Loved them. The downside is that you lose some storage space because of the hdwe & thickness of the drawer sides. Also, mine had side mounted roller hdwe & the inside of the cab doors got damaged from the slide on the drawer from the doors not getting opened fully. And you lose the adjustability that you would have with shelves.

Downside was more than compensated for by the upside of having very user friendly storage space. My roll outs were underneath a single wall oven & adjacent to the cook top so I used them for pots & pans. I used cabinets over the laundry room sink & W/D for pantry since it was just a few steps away from the kitchen.
