Sifting leads to clumping

Hi everyone,

I harvested my first bin recently I started by sifting with a 1/4 inch grate and then sifted that with a 1/8th grate. I managed to catch the worms as they went through but I didn't find any cocoons. It might just be my eyes aren't sharp enough to find those little guys.

What really bothered me though was that the castings clumped as I sifted them. Initially it looked like most of the first sittings would go through the final grate but after sifting they clumped into these little balls that wouldn't have gone through the first grate if I started over. Is this normal? Any suggestions on how to keep things light and airy?
