Best value durable non toxic flooring options?

We are moving into a new home that currently has old carpeting in the bedrooms and tile everywhere else. We have young children and pets. We want to remove all the carpet and the tile except for in the kitchen and baths. Due to allergies and a child with an autoimmune disease, it is important that we choose a product and installation process that involves minimal off gassing and other toxic exposure. At the same time, we have a limited budget. We like the look of wood flooring. From what I've read, hard wood and maybe bamboo are the least toxic options depending on the installation materials but I'm concerned about cost and wear over time (with two small kids we have a lot of spills...sometimes not immediately discovered). I appreciate your overall insight and any specific recommendations too.
