Need ideas for chandelier over my kitchen table

The focal point in my kitchen is the chandelier over my island which I love and I'll include a photo. I can't remember who made it and it's 17 years old. You see it first when

entering the kitchen.

My problem is when we built our house, DH wanted a fan over the kitchen table which I've always hated. I want to replace it with a new chandelier but it's next to the island and I can't figure out what to get that won't compete but works well. I could put the island fixture over the kitchen table but then what would I put over a square island?

My style is modern - maple shaker cabinets, getting quartz zodiaq coarse carrara marble counters - appliances are stainless steel as are door knobs and pulls and door handles. There is very little wall, currently creamy white but I may change to a light blue/green grey.

Kitchen table is Portica from Room and Board in stainless steel with frosted glass (watery beach green blue color). 60w 36d http://www.roomandboard.com/catalog/dining/tables/portica-tables.

The island is 48” x 50”

I am hoping to spend under $300. I'm hoping someone can give me some good ideas. I see so many gorgeous pictures of kitchens where the light fixtures look like they belong together even though they don't match.

Maybe consider a flush mount fixture so the island chandelier would be even more special?

in case you'e looking to keep your fan feature

we have this light that opens up the blade to become a fan.

we have it in our familyroom, not over kitchen table.

FWIW, I have a bowl type pendant over my table and I like it a lot. I have a fixture with small lights over my island and I didn't want even 'more' small lights in my room such as a chandelier would give. And, like you I wanted a less formal look to my kitchen. Putting a dimmer on it will control the amount of light you have at any given time, and the pendant bowl will give a nice finish to your table & seating area. Having said that, if you would prefer the look of a semi-flush mount there is no rule out there that says you can't do it.

Thanks for the responses! After some careful (read lengthy) browsing through photos on Houzz, I realize I need something lighter and more current over the island. With the 6 foot square island would it be better to have 1 hanging light fixture (possibly a quatrefoil), 2 glass or lantern styles spaced evenly, or I'm also thinking 3 hanging at different heights near the center (most likely glass)? Also here is the design inspiration for my kitchen (my cabinet selections, glass cabinets, hood and flooring are similar)

Wow, I see so many great ideas.

huango - I had no idea there were fans where you could fold the blades when you wanted it to look like a regular lamp. To be honest we have never used the fan in the 17 years we've lived here. But that is an interesting idea.

lavender_lass - that's a beautiful lamp. And it has a telescoping extension rod so I can play around with how far down I want it to hang.

crl_ That's an interesting idea - in fact I realize with my fan up near the ceiling that is what I currently have and it does work - you definitely see the lamp over the island long before you notice the fan/lamp. And LOL I used to have lamps like that round ball years ago in another house.

aktillery9 That's a very modern lamp and definitely could work.

nosoccermom - those are all excellent choices too.

We just installed this light over the eating area in our almost complete renovation. It comes with several downrods, but we used only a 6" downrod so that it didn't hang down too much over the kitchen table — total height is about 15" from the ceiling.

Matthew Ericson, thanks for that suggestion. Why did you choose to have it hang only 15" from the ceiling instead of lower as you might expect over a dining table?

In my case, I'm 6' 4" so I don't like having lights feeling like they're at eye level — or lower — to me, which is a good part of the reason why it's mounted a bit higher. Plus, our eating area is a pretty small nook at the end of a galley kitchen, and I didn't want to have it feel too crowded by a chandelier.

Matthew Ericson, thanks for the response - makes perfect sense then and it probably keeps the dining area feeling more open. nosoccermom is right, it's a cool lamp - I like the "industrial cage" look about it and I think it would work good with my other lamp and let it be the main focus because this one is simpler.
