Is semi-flush mount weird over a penninsula?
Comments (0)Cross posting from kitchen forum.. Demo starts in two weeks and I need to figure out my lighting fixtures. I'll have plenty of recessed lighting but wanted to add some pedants over the 87" long penninsula and sink for some added visual appeal. I love the look of the chunky "lantern" style but they are all so large and I have 7 1/2 foot ceiling so I think it will look bad. I came accross this fixture that I liked. Would I do one centered or two, spaced evenly between the chairs? http://www.lightinguniverse.com/semi-flush-ceiling-lights/livex-lighting-3-light-jefferson-semi-flush-ceiling-light_g710565.html?linkloc=cataLogProductItemsName And this one for a different look: http://www.homedepot.com/Lighting-Fans-Indoor-Lighting-Indoor-Ceiling-Lighting-Island-Lights/Sea-Gull-Lighting/h_d1/N-5yc1vZbvllZb52/R-203594818/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051 Anyone have pics they can share of semi-flush mount lights over your island or penninsula? I've looked at so MANY fixtures at this point that I'm numb....See MoreKitchen Lighting Plan: keep kitchen ceiling flush mount light?
Comments (2)In my opinion, I would use the recessed lighting and other layered lighting that is in your plan. I would not add a centered light. I think you will have a cleaner, more contemporary look without the additional light. I put recessed lighting in two kitchens and was extremely happy with the result. If you feel more light is needed, you could always add additional recessed lighting in center of the wider room....See MoreHelp with flush-mount or semi-flush mount light choice
Comments (10)Thanks Cheerpeople. :) I went out to the new house and they were painting, so it was looking like a "real" house now, which gave me a much better perspective. Armed with tape measure and my circle of cardboard, I determined the diameter is fine. But as justgotabeme was saying, what surrounds it makes a difference. The lights would be next to a short wall from the ceiling because the room behind it has pony walls and open walls. But the "pony" wall continues at the ceiling and comes down 17" ish. That means the semi-mount fixture would hang almost as low as the end of that wall, and I'm afraid it will look too crowded. So I think the flush-mount is the way to go. I really do like the semi-flush one, but this area is adjacent to the foyer, which is going to have two very large chandeliers, and I don't want it to be so completely busy with multiple conflicting hanging fixtures that compete with each other! Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all the help....See MoreCeiling light fixture - flush vs. semi-flush?
Comments (2)On a flushmount fixture, the whole "rim" is touching the ceiling. There is no way for heat to escape, and you don't get any light shining straight up from the light bulb and then reflecting off of the ceiling and into the room. On a semi-flushmount, there is a stem of sorts and the "rim" is dropped down a few inches from the ceiling. Sometimes you can put a higher wattage bulb in this style because the heat can escape, and you get the bonus of bouncing light off of the ceiling. Flushmounts have the advantage of being less obtrusive; might be better in a hallway. Semi-flush might be better in a foyer or over an island....See Moretzmaryg
