Kitchen Lighting Plan: keep kitchen ceiling flush mount light?
Comments (2)In my opinion, I would use the recessed lighting and other layered lighting that is in your plan. I would not add a centered light. I think you will have a cleaner, more contemporary look without the additional light. I put recessed lighting in two kitchens and was extremely happy with the result. If you feel more light is needed, you could always add additional recessed lighting in center of the wider room....See MoreHelp with flush-mount or semi-flush mount light choice
Comments (10)Thanks Cheerpeople. :) I went out to the new house and they were painting, so it was looking like a "real" house now, which gave me a much better perspective. Armed with tape measure and my circle of cardboard, I determined the diameter is fine. But as justgotabeme was saying, what surrounds it makes a difference. The lights would be next to a short wall from the ceiling because the room behind it has pony walls and open walls. But the "pony" wall continues at the ceiling and comes down 17" ish. That means the semi-mount fixture would hang almost as low as the end of that wall, and I'm afraid it will look too crowded. So I think the flush-mount is the way to go. I really do like the semi-flush one, but this area is adjacent to the foyer, which is going to have two very large chandeliers, and I don't want it to be so completely busy with multiple conflicting hanging fixtures that compete with each other! Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all the help....See MoreAny help appreciated - sizing semi-flush ceiling lights
Comments (10)Nine--I'm right there with you! These lights have caused me no end of stress, waaaaaayyy more than any other decision. I had almost settled on the Jefferson (is that yours?) when I realized my 8-ft. ceilings will need a flush-mount fixture. I have a 15 and 1/2 by 17 and 1/2 space now--it seems rather huge since the new wall is in but the room is still empty. I was just talking to the electrician and he suggests that apart from one fixture over the table on one side of the space and two pendants over the sink, five more fixtures should be plenty of light. Seems like a lot to me but he's quite experienced and had been good about my "no recessed lights" rule. He did say I should have three bulbs in each one (except for the sink lights,) so that they are bright enough; if they are too bright, I can always put lower wattage bulbs in them. I spoke with a couple of nice women at Rejuvenation (haven't tried Schoolhouse yet,) and one of them suggested 14 or 16-inch shades which can accommodate three bulbs each. Have you spoken to your electrician? He/she should know how far light will throw. Let me know how you're doing so I can calm down too!! Sweet Angie has been very kind to help me with this as well as my cabinet angst in the beginning--maybe she'll chime in....See MoreChoosing semi flush kitchen light fixture
Comments (7)Hello! It's definitely possible to not do a matching fixture and get the look you want. I like what a few of these projects did below by keeping the same metal material- so in your case the iron, and keeping that as the constant. I would not mix glass. I would try to do an open fixture or a solid black one as you will see below. I hope this helps envision your space a bit more.
